Did you know West Oakland’s 7th Street was once called the “Harlem of the West”? In the 1940-1960s, it was a jazz and blues center where Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, and Etta James performed at places like Esther’s Orbit Room. “The Music They Played on 7th Street: Oakland Walk of Fame" honors this era.

Oakland’s California Hotel was also a center for blues and jazz music of the time, hosting entertainers like Lena Horne, BB King, James Brown, and Sam Cooke.

Today, Oakland’s musical legacy continues with institutions like @oaktownjazz @livingjazz @westcoastbluessociety and musicians like @kevchoice. Experience shows at Black-owned @geoffreysliveoakland, and at @yoshisoakland @thesoundroomoakland.
