The Sobremesa residencies are underway. From October to December, 8 artist-researchers will work across three different contexts — Thessaloniki, Lisbon and Donostia/San Sebastián — developing situated research around food, migration, care, technology, geopolitical relations, memory and social organisation in and due to the Mediterranean-Iberian location within the EU.
Each residency-based research begins from a set of questions affected by the countries specific history with their own sense of identity and belonging, all the while expanding Sobremesa’s wider inquiry into food as both material and method: a way of producing, carrying and sharing knowledge.

The parallel timelines allow residents to engage across the three contexts to a partially shared programme, co-designed by Dela Christin Miessen, Juliette Thouin, Mar Vallejo and Andoni Munduate Dorronsoro. Through a series of local and international engagements, the residencies become a space to test residencies as a form of meta-research for Sobremesa, a way to develop inquiry that is shared and multi-modal, as well as for the development of the artists and the relationship with them.

Beginning in Southern Europe, where borders were historically permeable across the Mediterranean and beyond, Sobremesa attends to cuisines as constructions that often obscure their own mobility: shaped by displacement, trade routes, and survival tactics, ingredients and practices are absorbed, transformed, diluted, or excluded from culinary narratives.

The question is not simply who gets a seat at the table, but where and when the table begins and ends. For Sobremesa, the three residencies are spaces to stay with these questions through artistic practice, research, making, cooking and exchange.

Across Portugal, Spain and Greece, seven artists and practitioners will work with local contexts and communities to explore the relationships between food, migration, memory, identity and belonging.

On the 13th of February 2026, DIHAN and ZOT entered into an unholy matrimony. From that day on, we took on the name DIZOT (Does It ZOT).

The wedding ceremony took place at gallery Block C, where many witnesses gathered to celebrate the newlyweds. Feije Duim, the pastor of this unholy matrimony; Henry Alles, carer and caterer of the celebration; and Marijke Klamer, wizard of the altarpiece, made this wedding one of the most special unions there has ever been. Later, Quanta Qualia and Tanz Mein Herz took us into dreamscapes and other worlds, leading us gently into our sweet, sweet honeymoon.

No wedding would be complete without the many witnesses who came and gave the DIZOT union such a warm welcome. Thank you all for being there, for witnessing, for sharing, for caring. And, of course, to the many helping hands and volunteers who, like wedding fairies, took all the stress away from us, the newlyweds.

Our next event will be on the 17th of April at the Night of Philosophy at Forum with two transdisciplinary performance works by Lorenzo Modestini and Sofya Shaikut & Red Brut. Entrance to the DIZOT performances is free of charge. You can find more info in the link in our bio.

We speelde deze zomer op @noorderzonnl met 'Bakker, wat zing je mooi?!'. Twee dagen, zes voorstellingen in onze knusse container; alle kaartjes vlogen als warme broodjes over de toonbank, het was totaal uitverkocht! En wat een succes was het! En wat zijn we trots op alle spelers <3 Kijk maar 🥖 slide voor improvisatiescenes, wonderlijke ontmoetingen, hoge hoed opdrachten die tot leven komen en verkleedpartijen.

Looking back on a nourishing evening at @hetresort, where food became a thread connecting care, identity, and resistance.

We explored how recipes hold more than instructions - they carry cultural memory, medicinal wisdom, and the stories of those who came before us. @mirtheberentsen opened with a reflection on time and the Kroamschudderswegge tradition from the Achterhoek - how this rich currant bread was gifted by the ‘noaberschap’ (neighbors) at births, never bought for yourself, always shared as community care.

This was followed by a powerful lecture by Dr. Brenda Bartelink of @universityofgroningen on food, gender and the construction of the nuclear family during colonialism.

Participants brought recipes from bloodlines and chosen families, transforming them into a collective zine together with @nadjakimschlenker and @confortiialice. In the kitchen, @marentevandervalk and @henryalles led a cooking workshop featuring poffert and foraged herbal broth.

We ended by sharing a homemade meal, embodying what the day was all about: connection, transmission, and imagining new ways of coming together @eadeh @klaudijaylaite.

Guided by Mirthe Berentsen and with contributions from Dr. Brenda Bartelink (University of Groningen), chef Marente van der Valk, and artist Henry Alles, we explored how recipes are more than just cooking instructions during studium resort on June 2.

The evening began with a lecture and conversation on recipes as forms of heritage and emancipation, followed by a recipe exchange and zine-making workshop. Meanwhile, in the kitchen, dishes like poffert and a healing broth were being prepared, and visitors could sample slices of the 75 cm long krentenwegge with butter and cheese. Participants wrote their own cherished family recipes and shared related personal stories. The evening concluded with a communal dinner and reflection.

De avond begon met een lezing en gesprek over recepten als vormen van erfgoed en emancipatie, gevolgd door een receptenruil en zine-workshop. Ondertussen werd er in de keuken gewerkt aan gerechten als poffert, een helende bouillon en konden bezoekers een stukje van de 75 cm lange krentenwegge met boter en kaas proeven. Deelnemers schreven hun familierecepten en deelden de bijbehorende persoonlijke verhalen. De avond werd afgesloten met een gezamenlijk diner en reflectie.
