🇨🇦 Alberta Referendum Day | October 19, 2026

Over the past two days, I photographed both sides of Alberta’s historic debate: those who want independence and those who want Alberta to remain in Canada.

Both rallies I attended were peaceful, with passionate people standing up for what they believe in.

📸 Disclaimer: I’m not affiliated with either organization, and my role as a street photographer is to document history, not take sides through my work.

Personally, I voted to remain in Canada. 🇨🇦 Many may not know that I’m a first-generation Canadian, born in Montreal, Quebec. This is technically my second referendum, but the first one I’ve been able to vote in on this matter.

Today, I’m sharing separate slides from both rallies to showcase the people, emotions, and perspectives I captured through my lens.

Two rallies. Two perspectives. One province. One historic moment.

🗳️ Have you voted yet? Leave a comment below! 👇🏿

Today we showed up for Canada at the Alberta legislature. I felt compelled to show up and strike today and I’m glad I did.

We are all in this together.

I hope you show up tomorrow for the last day to vote on the referendum.

Please do your part. 🇨🇦 #forevercanada

This one goes out to all the privileged, grifting, crybaby, dark blue people out there: quit playing the victim and whining about your problems being so much worse than the rest of your peers and even worse, caused by them when they are facing those exact same problems, some even worse off. The extraction and movement of the resources of our land that you so desperately and insanely tie your identities to and the misguided, narrow-minded, short-sighted conception that those said resources will be the saviour of the (realistically doomed to fail) dark blue nation is what a lot of the problem stems from. The thing is... This is not that versus this. This is not Coke versus Pepsi. not red versus blue, nor up vs down And This is certainly not left versus right. This is an enslaved Humanity versus an evil Elite that are laughing at us and literally raping our children. Instead of praying for your family who are addicted or mentally unhealthy.... try *TALKING TO THEM, INSTEAD OF "GOD"* and ask them why they feel the need to escape in the first place. Instead of thinking of how we are doomed to fail, think of all the things we have to be grateful for... We could be living in a place where on any given day, a military could come into our homes to rape us, loot and then kill us while laughing the whole time then to salt the wound, we do not receive anything that resembles a proper burial, instead a bomb drops on our entire city, ensuring that "hypothetically" if maybe um uh.... our souls/spirits DO exist.... we are stuck in a limbo of the hellish landscape that has been made of our own home/land. We should be praying for Palestine we should be praying for Jordan and all of the marginalized nations of the East and wherever the hooks are sunk Deepest by the colonizing evil bastards who are blinded by their insatiable appetite for land/resources and patheticakly enough: capital/money, something that should be used as a tool in market/commerce, not something that should be looked at as the purpose of our lives.
Much Love

How does universal access to social services and healthcare benefit us all? Avnish Nanda, a (real) civil rights lawyer and activist, explains the benefits to Freedom Hour host Liberty Bell, a (not-so-real) podcaster played by comedian Henry Sir.

In this clip, Avnish debunks myths about the cost of providing healthcare and education to non-permanent residents.

Edmonton showed up to save Canada!

Thank you to all our incredible guests and performers: former Premier Rachel Notley, Henry Sir, Marilyn Buffalo, Ivy DeGagné, and the River Cree drummers.

And of course, thank you to my incredible MLA colleagues who have been putting in the work all summer to help save Canada.

Danielle Smith has thrown us into this divisive, costly referendum for her separatist friends. We are determined to send her a message. But that means everyone must get out and vote.

Advance voting is open until Saturday, and referendum day is Monday, October 19. Make your voice heard, and together we will save Canada!

Is Alberta becoming too pricey to maintain its economic growth? Civil rights lawyer and activist Avnish Nanda joins The Freedom Hour to discuss the referendum questions about immigrants, taxes, and the needs of the province.

Host Liberty Bell (played by comedian Henry Sir) is about as receptive as a right-wing podcaster can be.

Avnish and Liberty discuss the proposed questions in Alberta’s upcoming referendum, and debunk myths regarding the taxation of immigrants, the cost of providing healthcare and education, and the cultural diversity this referendum could either protect or undermine.

This video was featured in Issue 25 of Forward Weekly, Alberta’s Sunday Political Digest. Catch up on the last six weeks of The Road to Referendum series now to make sure you’re prepared to vote on Monday!
