Had this great photo shoot with my friend @kevczako last year in Joshua Tree National Park. I’ve been trying to seek out more unique locations that offer a bit of adventure. I’d discovered the Wall Street Mill trail. It leads to an abandoned mine. Along the way you pass ruins of the old Wonderland Ranch and all these crazy abandoned 1920s cars. Kevin had wanted to try something with an old, Southwest vibe. This location seemed like a fit. We kept wardrobe simple and rough like the environment and shot 35mm b&w neg stock as well as digital. The area was rugged and dusty, so we leaned into that. Kevin was down for it and an awesome collaborator. I was extremely happy with the results. We shot for several hours, but as seems to happen, almost all of the best shots came in that final hour before sunset and in the fleeting few minutes of fading twilight.

Have you hiked this trail in Joshua Tree? Who can pick out the film shots?

Inspired by Goethe’s idea of “elective affinities” — unexpected connections that emerge with an almost natural sense of recognition — the exhibition places photographs by artists from different generations, countries and photographic backgrounds alongside one another.

Through these diptychs, subtle relationships begin to appear: similar gestures, forms, light, landscapes, bodies and moods. Some of the artists never met, yet their photographs seem to enter into a quiet dialogue across time and distance.

Featuring works by Kathleen Alisch, Nomi Baumgartl, Sibylle Bergemann, Mariya Bilyan, Lillian Birnbaum, René Groebli, Jens Knigge, Koichiro Kurita, Machiko Kurita, Robert Lebeck, Herbert List, Isa Marcelli, Stefan Moses, Ulrike Ottinger, Marek Pozniak, Sheila Rock, Max Scheler, Songwen Sun-von Berg, Yuriko Takagi, Ayako Takaishi, Miriam Tölke, Donata Wenders, Wim Wenders and Kurt Wyss.

Currently on view is Elective Affinities, a group exhibition bringing together 24 photographers whose works are paired in carefully composed diptychs.

The exhibition explores unexpected visual connections between photographs — artists from different generations, countries and photographic traditions are brought into dialogue through similarities in form, light, gesture and atmosphere.
