HE MAIMAI AROHA: DILWORTH KARAKA

Aotearoa musician, singer, songwriter, and Pacific reggae pioneer, Dilworth Karaka (Waikato), who fronted the popular and politically charged group Herbs for four decades, has died.

From day one, Herbs married their surroundings, their ethics, to their sound - as Karaka explained in 2003: "We were able to sing about political things that were happening around New Zealand, and in the Pacific, that related to me as an individual. It was really, from there, that it started."

'Doing things their way', as manager Hugh Lynn put it, remained a core value for Karaka and Herbs as they forged a large fanbase, often without radio support and a changeable lineup (reaching, over time, a list of some 27-or-so members).

Karaka leaves an indelible legacy - as their songs, and their unwavering stance for unity and justice, continues to inspire new generations. Moe mai rā e te rangatira.

It's about 40 years too late, but I always thought this end section of the 'Herbs' tune 'Long Ago' deserved a bit of a sax solo. 🎷 🌿

*Been going through a bit of a kiwi music binge atm. Give me recs for ur favourite kiwi songs/bands/artists old or new!
