One of the genres I hold dearest to my heart is hyperpop, and I feel like theres so much “controversy” behind it, and confusion on what it even is now. Honestly I just remember being 18/19 and branching out of Rap/RnB for the first time and finding this music that was so outside of what I would usually listen to, but it instantly stuck with me, with the loud noises that just meshed together, the complicated beats with random sounds playing, all the chaos on 1 song just scratched an itch in my brain that I have never felt before. I know the origins of hyperpop really date back to A.G cook and SOPHIE, but where it really started for me was 100 geks, seeing everyone hating on it, also making fun of the music cause I didn’t really get it at the time, then eventually seeing similar artists and falling down a rabbit hole of music that validated the feelings I’ve had deep down but never really was able to express. Listening to Quinn, Glaive, Ericdoa, and midwxst as an 18 year old during the covid lockdown was really what kept me from going insane cause I saw these people my age making music that felt so personal and raw, from the lyrics to the emotions that only an instrumental could express through bass and synths.

What happened though?
I personally kept going deeper in the “underground hyperpop brainmelt” scene to the point where I realized I wasnt even listening to songs where I related to the lyrics, but just the instrumentals, and theres absolutely nothing wrong with that, but it became so flooded that it was hard to tell who really cared about the music they made and who just made music; atleast thats how it felt for me. I started to step away from listening to the genre while still keeping up with artists I enjoyed, watching them grow as I grew up too, but this year it feels like something changed. Passionate artists never stopped existing or creating, but because of how flooded the genre got, kinda even to the point where “hyperpop” lost meaning, it was hard to find those artists, and I started to just listen to hip-hop again. I kept listening to Quinn, following her projects, keeping up with Jane Remover, but not really stepping into the genre, but I had a s
