H.E.R.E. Journal is a magazine about the Hudson Valley—the ecology, people, & where the two meet. Welcome to H.E.R.E. Publication of @theunderstoryhv

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Don’t miss Robin Wall Kimmerer and Margaret Roach at the inaugural H.E.R.E. Salon at Hudson Hall, the first in a series of Hudson Valley conversations that bring the pages of the magazine to life.

On November 17th, we welcome Robin Wall Kimmerer: author, botanist, MacArthur Fellow, and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. Robin will open with a talk, then join New York Times garden writer Margaret Roach to expand on her interview in H.E.R.E. Journal Issue 1, exploring our reciprocal relationship with the natural world and the kinship between the people and the places that sustain them. These questions run through her work, from Braiding Sweetgrass to The Serviceberry, and through our shared work here in the Hudson Valley.

An audience Q&A and book signings with Robin and Margaret will close the evening.

Tickets are $25 and will go fast! Get yours at the link in our bio.

Presented by The Understory and Hudson Hall.

Resilience is knowing your neighbors.

On September 17, nearly 500 people packed the River Pavilion at Hutton Brickyards for our Climate Week mixer. Guests included farmers, land trusts, public radio, local government, artists, forest defenders, housing builders, faith-based mutual aid groups, and a good number of people who simply care about this place. They came from across Columbia, Dutchess, Ulster, Greene, Albany, Rensselaer, Orange, and beyond, and many met for the first time.

That’s social resilience: the web of relationships a region leans on when things get hard. We can’t fund our way to it alone, but we can make room for it to grow.

Thank you to everyone who came, lingered, and made the evening so collaborative.

Thank you @luca.pearl.khosrova for capturing the event so beautifully.

@herejournal is HERE!

Introducing the Hudson Valley’s newest magazine - 152 pages on the 10 counties that make up the Hudson River Estuary Region. H.E.R.E. Journal explores the region’s ecology and people. Inside you’ll meet some bat scientists, flying squirrels, climate migrants, and the family behind @evergrowingfamilyfarm (seen in image 2!), view Frederic Church’s Catskills and a round Shaker barn, and follow beavers to the underriver.

With contributors including Robin Wall Kimmerer, Stephen Shore, Leila Philip, Deborah Berke and Victoria Johnson among many more, H.E.R.E. Journal is designed by Matt Willey (@mrwilley) at Pentagram and edited by Ann Marie Gardner (@annmarieingtown).

Made possible by The Understory, every copy you buy funds our work building social and ecological resilience across the region. The same goes for the H.E.R.E. merch, from the Firefly Hat to the Imposter Ladybug bandana. Proceeds go straight back into the communities and ecosystems on the Journal’s pages.

The Hudson Valley has long been a proving ground for how Americans understand their relationship to the natural world. Today that legacy continues in a new form, with researchers at the Cary Institute, Bard College, Riverkeeper, and the Hudson Valley Farm Hub studying forests, rivers, urban environments, and human communities as interconnected systems. Our deep dive into the region's ecological research is at the link in bio.

No better pair than my perfectly broken in Fort Worth Brown Babas for kicking around at the @hoteltivoli for a long weekend and, of course, wandering nextdoor to @fortunesicecream for a scoop of their famous Sour Cherry Labne and Rose Pistachio ice cream 😋 #howwesabah #wheretonext

Thank you to the nearly 500 people who came to our mixer during Climate Week last week at Hutton Brickyards! We were blown away by the energy and enthusiasm of all our attendees, alongside our shared commitment to building resilience — both ecological and social — in the Hudson Valley.

We had delicious local snacks, we sold a ton of copies of @herejournal, we shared about our Regional Resilience Grants, and we enjoyed each other’s company.

If you weren’t able to make it, fear not! You can order your own copy of H.E.R.E. Journal at herejournal.org/shop, and everything you need to know about Regional Resilience Grants is on our website — we’ll also be covering it in our October 1st webinar.

We’ve got more photos and stories coming, but for today, we just want to share how grateful we are to be in community with you all, gathering to come up with solutions to address what’s coming.

Grateful and a little starstruck: designer Jeff Glendenning — NYT Magazine veteran, now at Studio Glendenning — just named the @herejournal cover in his personal collection of unforgettable magazine covers, in the same company as Rolling Stone, Interview, and New York Magazine.

H.E.R.E. Journal, edited by Ann Marie Gardner, is a print magazine about the Hudson Valley — its ecology, its people, and where the two meet. It’s funded by The Understory and is part of one of our four main programs, bringing in-depth regional storytelling and original photography to residents and Hudson Valley lovers alike.

His top pick, fittingly for today, is the NYT Mag’s 2001 “Remains of the Day” cover — the original rendering of what became Tribute in Light, the twin beams that have lit up the Manhattan sky every year since.

Full piece by @coverjunkie at the link in our bio.
