living in Barcelona…

I can’t believe it’s been two years since we set off on our first long-stay adventure together. In 2023, @calin.charles and I packed up our suitcases, and journeyed to Barcelona for three months on whim. We had put all of our personal belongings into a single bedroom at our apartment in Calgary, handed the keys over to a friend, and traded it for a winter spent in the capital of Catalonia.

We learned a lot over the following three months, especially that that type of travel just wasn’t for us.

Three months is both too long, and too short. Allow me to elaborate: It’s too long for general travel. We didn’t have the opportunity to travel anywhere else in Spain (our budget couldn’t stretch any further), and we were able to see all the local sights pretty quickly, not working full-time. But, it’s too short of a time to establish any kind of community, get over culture shock and integrate, or learn a language. You definitely need a visa and plan a long-term stay if those are your goals.

If we were to do it again, keeping in mind we do prefer a slower pace, but also enjoy novelty and new experiences as people with ADHD, we would book either week-long or month-long stays (depending on how much there is to see or do in the location) to hop between. This allows for weekly or monthly discounts to still be taken advantage of, but allows you to actually travel around on a “sabbatical.”

Although we might have done things differently, we still think back in awe at our time there, and are proud of ourselves for stepping outside of the box and trying something new!

Calin and I are headed back up the parkway today for a little R&R. The last time we were there, we stopped at @glacierviewlodge with @pursuitbanffjasper and had the incredible adventure with @columbiaicefieldadventure

I was definitely channeling vintage adventure girl aesthetic here in this old leather jacket I picked up from a thrift store in Barcelona. As much as the icefields are an incredible natural wonder, I couldn’t help but nerd out over these giant all-terrain vehicles.

I’ve always really loved interiors. Taking photos of them, designing them, appreciating thoughtful spaces. Tbh that’s why I always loved playing the sims. These photos are from our Porto & Lisbon @airbnb s. I really connected with both of these apartments, and they were some of the best airbnbs we’ve stayed in.

With airbnb on the outs in many places (including here in Canada), Im curious to see how this effects travelers - especially when traveling in a group. This is typically when I use airbnbs myself, I don’t find it worthwhile for just two people. We were with my family in Portugal, so had a need for a bigger place. That being said, I appreciate that governments are taking action to (hopefully) improve the worldwide housing crisis. Maybe then I can one day appreciate my own home, instead of someone else’s.

What are your thoughts on the new airbnb situation in New York, Paris, BC, etc?

the best days are spent by the water 🌊

here are some memories from our last day in Portugal, spent at the ocean in Porto. The day started off with a long walk along the shore, and ended with sunset rosé.

I know I always say that I’d like to revisit the places I travel, but Portugal is definitely one of the top that I need to spend more time in.
