Thousands of kilometres from home, the unmistakable sound of South Africa once again filled an international rugby stadium.

South African singer-songwriter Jesse Clegg delivered a stirring rendition of “Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika” in Perth, Australia, ahead of the Springboks’ Test against the Wallabies at Optus Stadium.

For a moment, the rugby rivalry took a back seat.

As Jesse’s voice carried the anthem across the stadium, South Africans watching from home and those proudly wearing the green and gold in Australia were reminded of something much bigger than rugby — home, heritage, unity and pride. 🇿🇦

It is also a particularly special moment for Jesse. Earlier this month, he performed the national anthem before the Springboks’ clash with the All Blacks in Baltimore, receiving widespread praise for the emotion and power he brought to the performance. (Jacaranda FM)

Now, just weeks later, he has done it again — this time on Australian soil.

And there is something beautifully symbolic about hearing a South African anthem sung thousands of kilometres away from the country it represents.

The voices may be in Australia.

The stadium may be Australian.

But for those moments, South Africa was in the room.

Jesse Clegg isn’t simply singing a song before a rugby match. He is carrying a piece of South Africa with him onto the world stage — and giving South Africans everywhere a moment to stand a little taller.

One voice.
One anthem.
One nation.
One unmistakable feeling of home.
