Jewish Plays Project in Toronto ✡️ The past 48 hours filled my heart and soul. Working on some great plays, stepping into bold characters and connecting with brilliant artists who quickly became friends. I feel so lucky to have been part of the first Toronto round, and I hope it’s only the beginning of many more to come! Congratulations to everyone involved- the cast, crew, our amazing director @illananyc, the wonderful producer @hershblatt, the playwrights behind each excerpt, and especially Lila Rachel Becker, winner of the Toronto contest with her powerful play Flatbush Lysistrata. My heart is full💙 @jewishplays 📷 @milesnadaljcc

Three plays. One room. A community leaning in together. Last night, the Jewish Plays Project made its Canadian debut at the Al Green Theatre, bringing bold new Jewish stories to life through live readings and conversation. Over the course of the evening, audiences experienced three powerful works in development, each offering a distinct voice, perspective, and window into contemporary Jewish storytelling. And then, in true JPP fashion, the audience took on the role of jury, casting their votes to determine which play will move forward. Congratulations to our winning play: Flatbush Lysistrata by Lila Rachel Becker 👏 Thank you to our incredible partners, the Jewish Plays Project, Koffler Arts, and Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company, and to the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto’s Kultura Collective for their support in bringing this night to Toronto. We’re so grateful to our dedicated jury, talented performers, and creative team, whose care, insight, and artistry made the experience so dynamic and meaningful. And to everyone who joined us: thank you for showing up with curiosity, openness, and a willingness to take part. This is what it looks like to build the future of Jewish theatre together. @diacoram_photography for @shawngoldbergphotos A group of people is seated on a stage with music stands in front of them, likely for a reading or performance. What a night! 🎭 Earlier this week, our Toronto City Readers gathered to debate and select the finalists for the Jewish Plays Project, part of a global search for bold new Jewish theatre. After passionate discussion, three remarkable plays rose to the top. The shortlist is: 🎭 Flatbush Lysistrata by Lila Rachel Becker Three Hasidic women meet at an axe-throwing bar to plan a sex strike — a sharp comedy about how women carve out space for themselves within fundamentalism. 🎭 This Place Stinks by Jacob Surovsky A darkly funny and imaginative take on Noah — who decides the only way to save the world is to destroy his own family. 🎭 Shura – The Mission of Identifying Life by Roee Joseph A powerful documentary-inspired play about a soldier tasked with identifying the dead after October 7, and the fragile line between witnessing horror and choosing life. Now the decision moves to you. On Sunday, May 3, join us at the Al Green Theatre for staged readings of excerpts from all three plays. After the performances, the audience votes to decide which script moves forward toward full production. Come experience new Jewish theatre in the making, followed by refreshments and conversation. Sun | May 3 | 7–8:30pm Presented with the Jewish Plays Project, Koffler Arts, and Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company, and supported by UJA’s Kultura Collective. Directed by Illana Stein. Jewish Plays Project Producer Hershel Blatt.
