POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Many people don’t know this, but before I was an internationally-touring DJ, I was a radio show host on @wnyu from 2020-2025. I realized that so much of the music we listen to were made by men, and I always had to dig for tracks by women and non-binary artists, especially in contemporary classical music, which is what I curated at that time.

Fast forward to when I started djing, and I encountered a similar problem. There is so much intention, research, and commitment behind being a music curator that people don’t often think about. That’s why I started a new show called “Zeros + Ones” in 2024 — to highlight FLINTA electronic music artists and pay homage to the history of early electronic music (which was predominantely led by trans and female artists). The show ran for 2 seasons on @wnyu and @subtleradio.

I’ve been taking a break from the show as we look for a new station to host it on! If you’re a community-run radio station, I would love to work with you!

when music becomes a commodity, the act of creation becomes labour. the ‘aura’ of the work is displaced as reproducible and this exchange-value reorganises listening into consumption.

this is precisely the transformation Walter Benjamin diagnoses for art under mechanical reproduction, and becomes accentuated in this age of AI art.

if we are to resist this type of reproducibility in our art, we must relate it to the work’s unique presence in time and space, which mechanical reproduction erodes. rather than focusing on the end product, we are seeing a shift towards foregrounding workflows, decisions, and embodied risk as an essential part of the work itself, and by doing so, focusing more attention on the human trajectory of the work rather than the end product.

ARTIST FEATURE 1/2: Siena Chanel (@sienachanel) 🌿

TW (Sexual Assault):

Today we have broken up our Artist Feature into two sections so that we can give it the attention it deserves. As April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we’ll be highlighting one incredible up and coming artist who’s using her platform to shine a light on the effects of SA and survivors.

Siena is currently a 20-year old sophomore at NYU, based out of NYC and NJ where her family now lives. Moving around a lot as a kid, Siena was never really sure where to call “home”. While pursuing her music, Siena is also found a passion for a variety of other things including fashion, sex-education, gender equality, and of course, her love for Harry Styles. You can find a mixture of all of these things on her Tik Tok @see.en.uh where she is most well known for creating outfits that correlate with some of her favourite songs.

Head to part two, up now, to read more about Siena’s latest single “mid-july”.
