Thank you to everyone who joined us for Sensory World 101 to explore sensory needs and the practical tools that can support them. 🤝💯
ㅤ
Led by Melissa Chavez, MOT, of the @hsacaymanislands the session unpacked how we each process the world differently, why everyday environments can feel overwhelming for some and under-stimulating for others, and what simple strategies can make a real difference at home, in the classroom, and in the workplace!
ㅤ
Attendees got hands-on with a range of sensory tools and left with a bag of tools and ideas they can start using right away. The questions and conversations throughout the session were a reminder of just how many people in our community are ready to learn and create more inclusive spaces. 🙌
ㅤ
A huge thank you to Melissa for sharing her expertise, and to every parent, caregiver, educator, and community member who came out.

🦈 First IUCN Important Shark & Ray Areas announced in the Cayman Islands 🦈

Three Cayman Islands sites: Queen’s Highway, Gun Bay, and Bloody Bay have been officially recognised as Important Shark and Ray Areas (ISRAs) in the newly released North American and Caribbean Atlantic e-Atlas by the IUCN SSC Shark Specialist Group. These areas were nominated and accepted by IUCN’s international reviewers based on data collected through the DoE Sharklogger Network citizen science programme.

Using more than 57,000 dive surveys submitted by volunteer Sharklogger Network participants between 2017 and 2025, the three areas were identified as important aggregation sites for the Endangered Caribbean reef shark, highlighting the Cayman Islands' global significance for shark conservation and the survival of this Endangered species.

The recognition places Cayman among 191 ISRAs identified across the region and showcases the power of citizen science. Thank you to each diver, snorkeler and dive operator including their dive professionals who has contributed their dive data to the Sharklogger Network!

🎤 Panel Spotlight: Neurocognitive Disorders, Neuropsychological Assessment and Legal Capacity

When someone begins experiencing memory loss, confusion or changes in their ability to make decisions, how do we know what's happening AND how can we protect their independence and wishes?

As Cayman's population ages, these are increasingly important questions for individuals, families and healthcare professionals.

In “Neurocognitive Disorders, Neuropsychological Assessment and Legal Capacity: A Cayman Pathway from First Concern to Protected Autonomy,” a multidisciplinary panel will examine how we recognise, assess and respond to cognitive decline, including conditions such as dementia.

Joining the discussion are:

🔹 Dr. Ryan Punambolam – Clinical Director of Neurology, Doctors Hospital Cayman

🔹 Dr. Liezel Anguelova – Clinical Psychologist, Cayman Islands Health Services Authority

🔹 Jonathan Dwyer – Legislative Counsel, Cayman Islands Government

🎤 Moderator: Dr. Mark Paramlall – Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Ministry of Health, Environment & Sustainability

Together, they'll discuss the importance of early recognition, accurate diagnosis and timely legal planning, particularly while individuals can still make decisions about their own care, finances and future.

This important conversation will help families and professionals better understand when to seek help, what support is available and how to protect both the wellbeing and autonomy of people experiencing cognitive decline.
