What happens to our memories when the objects that hold them begin to disappear? What remains of a life when its photographs fade, its letters deteriorate, and the traces once carefully preserved slowly return to matter?

In 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫 (𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬, 𝐦𝐲 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭, 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐚𝐬 𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐬), Duccio Viani (@mehdi_a_madou) transforms Het Paviljoen into a domestic cellar brought to the surface. Filled with photographs, letters, postcards and fragments of family histories, the installation explores the cellar as a space where memories accumulate, are preserved and gradually transform.

Starting from his own family archive and expanding his research into other family cellars, Viani investigates what he describes as an ecology of the self: the relationship between identity, memory and the material traces we leave behind.

As the apparent order of the archive begins to collapse, photographs and documents are exposed to humidity and decay. What was once preserved as evidence of individual lives gradually loses its structure, becoming matter once again.

The installation is extended by 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙩, a collaborative sound piece by @_alex.celis_ . Moving between decomposition and renewal, the work connects the cellar to a larger ecological cycle in which memories, images, bodies and environments continually change form.

Together, Viani and Celis invite us to reconsider our relationship with the things we inherit, collect and preserve.

What does it mean to preserve a memory? And what might emerge when we allow the things we hold on to to change, decompose and become something new?

Yesterday marked the end of Het Paviljoen’s ‘Eye becomes water’, the 2025 exhibition programme I curated with Daphné Charitos, Yasemin Köker, Natalija Gucheva, Abel Hartooni and Temitayo Olalekan.

We hosted a series of four exhibitions from February-June, with work from Sanie Irsay, Shervin/e Sheikh Rezaei, Soraya Abdelhouaret, Reinier Vrancken, Amel Omar, Zeynep Kayan, Sacha Rey and a public programme from Radio Svitlo.

Thank you to all the artists we had the pleasure of working with, to my wonderful team and to Curatorial Studies KASK for the opportunity.
