POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

At NORPA, the Northern Rivers Performing Arts organisation, the new performing arts space has been designed with flooding in mind. The ground floor is built from concrete, hardwood and steel, allowing it to be washed out and reopened quickly if floodwater returns.

“The whole downstairs is sacrificial, formed of concrete, like a road, and hardwood and steel. So we’ve actually got a venue now that you can just hose out, and you’re back in a week [after a flood],” says theatre director Julian Louis.

“There is a lot of hope, a lot has been rebuilt. There’s a lot of funding that has been realised and activated.”

At Bebey, a cafe in Lismore’s CBD, and across other parts of the community, rebuilding also means adapting to the reality of living in a flood-prone town.

Co-owner Dan Etheridge says the people choosing to stay and remain part of the community have done some deep thinking about what they can and can’t take for granted, and what it means to be prepared.

But he recognises that staying, rebuilding and adapting are not choices available to everyone.
“We’re also at a time economically where there’s not a lot of choice for most people. Choice is a luxury; it’s a privilege. Most people don’t have it.”
