In 2025 I hired a Casting Director to find an actor to play Julia Weist in “Questioning.”

For fictional Julia, demeanor and performance were crucial, but her look was important as well. She had to convincingly embody this artist at midlife. So, on a scorching Los Angeles morning last March I arrived for a head shot appointment. They did my hair and makeup and I was directed how to stand and pose. I inserted myself into the system so that an image would come out the other side. That photo was the key visual reference for the casting process, which was a weird and wonderful endeavor.

Friends and family weighed in as we searched for this version of me. Some actors I thought could make excellent Julias were resoundingly rejected by others in my life. I listened to opinions like, there is none of you in her. This person smiles at the right moments. You do that with your fingers. She looks too young (ouch). Seven women developed “call back” performances and each agreed that their headshots could be used in future artwork: Valerie McCann, Chelsea Lutz, Madeleine Hernandez, Erika Mugglin, McKenzie Such, Allegra Caldera, and Gabriella Goldstein.

Erika became our lead and I immediately wanted to be her best friend. But I also thought it would be too creepy to make platonic overtures to someone I had hired to be my surrogate. Thankfully, in a perfect LA arc, she invited me to a pool party in Highland Park and our buddy movie began.

I’m pleased that my headshot, “Casting Call: Portrait of the Artist as an Actress” (2026) will be one of many works on view in December in my solo presentation with @moskowitzbayse at Art Basel Miami.

Today feels like a good day to post this, given I uploaded it to YouTube and it posted publicly accidentally and it is already generating views!

Full disclosure and TW pregnancy/pregnancy loss: in August I miscarried, and with it came a crushing depression (who knew you still experienced postpartum hormones even without carrying to full term?!). To try managing my mental health, I did what I knew: be creative. I gave myself a writing challenge in October, and one of the prompts was “write 5 dramatic pitches.” This was one of the five: “One in Four”.

The writing didn’t pull me out of my feels, so I decided to fully flesh out the short script and shoot it. The problem was I didn’t have a budget. Part of my healing was making it anyway, with what resources I did have: a good story, wonderful friends, and a generously cheap editor.

I made this on my iPhone 13 (not even a pro) with no crew, no lighting, no mics, no sound editing, and what little money I had in my checking account. I’m hoping the story carries the film, and the project will encourage other artists to make art!

Enjoy, and if you’re “one in four” who have gone through something similar, I hope you’ve wrapped yourself in love, grace, and been able to find some peace. 🩵 Link in bio!
