Controversial opinion: Halloween is better than Christmas 🎃👻🦇

Wait wait wait, hear me out!

There's just as much delicious and indulgent food involved, the option to go to town on decorations, and you get to dress up and have a party BUT there's no expectation to buy gifts or orchestrate the 'perfect' day. All the fun but none of the pressure!

Sadly the bakery is closed on actual Halloween this year, so I got my spooky groove on this weekend instead, with graveyard brioche (filled with chocolate custard and red berry compote, topped with a chocolate crumb and a wee little ghostie) and hazelnut and panela shortbread.

Every time I make biscuits I forget how simple but satisfying they can be. Just rub 225g Naturli into 335g flour and 110g sugar, chuck in any inclusions, roll out, cut out your shapes, chill and bake. Voila, tasty bikkies!

Thanks @heylbakery for an amazing day learning about the art of sourdough. I've got more bread than I could possibly eat! I think it's fair to say that I need to play around with oven temperatures, my home bake came out more than a little dark

10 Devon bakeries to try this weekend, because I genuinely believe a good bakery is worth travelling for.
I love a bakery pilgrimage. Give me really good sourdough, buttery pastries, pillowy focaccia, light-as-air sponge and anything made with brilliant ingredients and I’m very, very happy.

From independent bakeries and artisan bread to beautiful pastries, cakes, focaccia and proper sourdough, these are 10 Devon bakeries I think are well worth putting on your list.

Have you tried our summer menu? We’ve got plenty of refreshing lighter dishes - like our hot-smoked salmon topped @heylbakery toast, with a lemon dill cream cheese, rocket and roasted capers. Our kitchen is open 9-3pm this sunny Saturday and Sunday! ☀️

JUNE 26

On my personal account I always make an end of the month dump, and I've decided to try doing the same here!

This month I went to:
Plymouth, Southwold, Cambridge, Birmingham, Maker & Rame, London (and also Bristol)

I've also included some sketchbook and process pictures, and a slide dedicated to media I've been consuming.

Plymouth

I went as part of the Fitzwilliam Museum's Young Producers to The Box in Plymouth for a summit with other youth groups from London, Bradford and Plymouth. It was the culmination of our project on the Portrait of Mai by Sir Joshua Reynolds, named Journeys with Mai.

I swam in the Tinside Lido, a 1953 Art Deco lido filled with seawater, and also the Devils Point tidal pool.

Had a great coffee @opecafe (thanks to those guys for recommending the tidal pool to me!), ate some pastries from @heylbakery on the beach.

Saw the Mai exhibition @theboxplymouth They managed to display an impressive amount of objects that provide context to the painting, and now that the exhibition is closed, we won't see Mai again in the UK for a while as the painting is being shipped off to LA in time for the Olympics.

On my way back home I also managed to sneak another pastry in from @fortitudebakehouse (my go to spot when I'm travelling through London).

Southwold

I invited my friends over to mine over the weekend for a mini beach holiday. We drove up to Southwold, swam in the sea, made a busty sand mermaid, and ate some fish and chips.

Cambridge

I was back in Cambridge for another session with the Young Producers as we started ideating our next project that coincides with a rehanging of the Italian Renaissance room there.

London

I passed through on my way to Birmingham so unsurprisingly I got another @fortitudebakehouse pastry, sat in Gordon Square and drew some of the people in the park.

Birmingham

Spent another weekend in Birmingham, having drinks with friends, painting our nails and watching TV. I always find a great scene in Birmingham to photograph, this time it was this sad half-gutted looking electric box in front of the graveyard.

Maker and Rame

After spending time in Plymouth, I knew there was so much more to do in the area,
