POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Michael Neff @heyneff is a serious thinker, and I appreciate the care he put into this work. It begins with a prompt: THIS IMAGE HAS BEEN DELETED. The resulting 1400 image outputs are then randomly served up inside a hacked eBay listing. You receive a print of the image in the listing at the moment of purchase. Love it.

Title: THIS IMAGE HAS BEEN DELETED (WYSIWYG), 2026 by Michael Neff

Description:
The image featured in this description is pulled from a collection of 1,405 files. Every output was generated using only the prompt "THIS IMAGE HAS BEEN DELETED," and an aspect ratio. By centering the work on such an ambiguous phrase, I am pushing the model to reveal its own internal bias—the underlying structural grain of its training data.

While 99% are synthetic artifacts of our current AI era, the remaining 1% are authentic relics from the Web 2.0 period—remnants of a time defined by fragile servers and the human use of text-as-image. This project bridges the distance between the early days of eBay and the contemporary mechanics of blind NFT minting. Using custom software on my server, I have automated a cycle where the hotlinked image refreshes every 90 seconds. While the eBay listing remains static, the visual object is in constant flux. If you find a version that resonates, you must act before the server moves on. The only way to track this evolution is through a manual refresh.

The buyer receives the image from the time of transaction as a unique archival print, approximately 9x12 inches.

As the year comes to a close, we’re looking back at one of the core threads of our program.

HEFT Releases

As part of HEFT’s curatorial vision and long-term commitment to artists, HEFT Releases has served as a platform for launching curated collections that extend beyond the exhibition calendar.

Throughout 2025, these releases unfolded across digital editions, physical presentations at our Lower East Side gallery, and live moments such as Conversations, bringing artists and collaborators into dialogue with our community.

HEFT Releases became a space for continuity, experimentation, and sustained engagement with artistic practice.

We’re excited to share what’s ahead in 2026.
New artists, releases, and activations are on the way.

Editions from HEFT Releases remain available.
Inquiries via DM.

Michael Neff's (@heyneff) ‘Rules of the Game’ was part of our MORE.zip exhibition in April 2024, and explores turning the familiar into the uncanny

The series delves into the typology of fields, courts, and tracks, capturing them from an overhead perspective reminiscent of satellite imagery or drone photography. The results provoke a questioning of the familiar: what are these altered sports called, and by what rules are they governed?

Beneath the surface, it becomes evident that these anomalies are not products of camera tricks, but the outcomes of AI image generation, governed by blackbox rulesets that use observations of relationships to mimic reality, but ultimately fail under human scrutiny.

Sad to read in the @nytimes about the uncertain future of the 60 Wall Street atrium. I shot “Oasis” there during my LMCC Workspace residency in 2005.
