Julia Modes | The Paraliterary: Art Criticism in the Expanded Field

“The stylistic method of inserting different text passages into a piece of writing is called ‘paraliterary.’ The term was coined by [Rosalind] Krauss herself in 1980 […]. According to Krauss, the paraliterary is not a model for systematically unpacking an artwork’s meaning, but ‘theory in operation.’ It reflects the strategies of construction and linguistic operations of the text, rather than only referring to a certain subject matter.”

Julia Modes is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Art History at the University Hildesheim. She studied art history, philosophy, and creative writing in Berlin, Melbourne, and New York. Her dissertation examined violence and history in the work of the US-American artist Cy Twombly against the backdrop of the cultural-political tensions between Europe and the United States in the 1960s. Since 2021, she has taught art history in Berlin, Fribourg, and Karlsruhe. Her current project investigates the role of women researchers in US-American art criticism, focusing on Rosalind Constable, the avant-garde talent scout for Time Inc.
