Yesterday’s event for Mariluz Garcia was such an incredible reminder of what real community leadership looks like. The room was filled with support from State Senators, State Assemblymembers, City Councilmembers, a judge, and former elected officials and community advocates — and honestly, that kind of support speaks volumes. When so many respected leaders show up for one person, it’s because they’ve seen the work, the heart, and the impact firsthand. 🇺🇸✨

From fighting for safer neighborhood🏡, behavioral health resources, housing access and infrastructure improvements 🚧 to rolling up her sleeves for community cleanups and outreach efforts, Mariluz continues to show up for Washoe County in meaningful ways every single day.

She’s been recognized for environmental advocacy, works closely with organizations focused on homelessness ,and public safety, and continues pushing for a healthier, more connected community for families across Reno, Sparks, and Sun Valley.
❤️🤍💙

What stood out most last night wasn’t just the crowd , it was the energy in the room. People genuinely believe in her vision, her leadership, and her heart for this community. Reno is lucky to have leaders who lead with compassion, action, and authenticity… and Mariluz is definitely one of them. 🙌✨

We’re proud of all the humanist, atheist, agnostic, and nonreligious candidates who ran for office this year, and the growing engagement of our community in the political process.

These elected officials did not just happen to publicly identify with our community. @freethoughtequality does extensive outreach to candidates and elected officials to show that there is a humanist and atheist community to support them, demonstrate that being their authentic selves will not end their careers, and encourages members of our community to run for office.

More than a quarter of our country’s population identifies as religiously unaffiliated, and we are making our values known at the ballot box and are running for—and winning—seats in public office. Congrats to these folks who are new to their positions!
