Happy International Intangible Cultural Heritage Day!

To celebrate, I’m sharing all my looks from this week where I’m wearing batik—which was designated World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage by @unesco in 2009–from very different regions and batik traditions in Java. Some of the looks are also involving kebaya, which is a more recent World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, having been designated as such in 2024.
.

It’s been more than a year ago that I started incorporating batik into my daily look, and not only for special occasions. There is no one specific reason why I began to do so. But what’s becoming increasingly clear is that every time I wear batik, it adds another layer of meaning and depth to my day. Because each batik motif that I wear at any given time contains a specific message, even representing certain prayers.

Like the one I’m wearing today, which is Batik Ceplok Sidoguri. The name Sidoguri comes from the yellow flowering plant Sidoguri which is prized for its anti-inflammatory health benefits. It is also an ingredient for jamu—Indonesia’s traditional herbal medicines—which is yet another World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage!

Additionally, this batik is made completely by hand and dyed using natural plant materials. Two things that I believe our Mother Earth can appreciate in this period of time.

Apparently, Ciwaringin is a village in Cirebon. And apparently, the batik tradition there got a lot of influence from Islamic teachings. Like the story of the prophet Yusuf / Joseph who was described in the Quran as being very beautiful—just like this Batik Yusufan I’m wearing.

Thank you @batiktulis.ku for having crafted this Batik Yusufan tulis and then taught me these precious knowledge.

My very first ever #grwm style reel so please excuse the chaos 💀

So here is me styling this antique batik tulis from Cirebon that is even older than myself as my contribution for #batikday

This style of batik is called Batik Kompeni (“Company batik”) which is a specific type of Batik Cerita (“Storytelling batik”). Batik Cerita is a style of batik that got influenced by European aesthetic, usually by depicting a scene from a European fairy tale. But instead of fairy tales scenes, Batik Kompeni depicts scenes from wars waged by the VOC (aka the first multinational company in the world) and Dutch colonial forces in Indonesia. They started to be produced in 19th century by batik houses in Pekalongan (a city on the northern coast of Java) at the heights of the Aceh War.

Later, after the World War I impacted the economy and subsequently reduced the demands for batik, many batik houses in Pekalongan (many of which were owned by Chinese Peranakan women) had to close down. Some of them moved to Cirebon, and brought Batik Cerita style to local batik tradition there.

Eventually, in 1980s, a batik artisan in Cirebon crafted this Batik Kompeni which ended up with @batik.kenangan. When I saw the batik on sale it caught my interest because it depicts a scene of slave patrol during the VOC or Dutch colonial era. It is likely a reproduction of an older batik, or perhaps a new creation altogether. Either way, seeing it reminds me of batik’s remarkable ability to retain our collective memory. And how batik itself continues to evolve, absorbing many influences introduced by migrations and colonialism, yet still remains largely true to its roots.

And yes, I regularly bike while wearing batik in this drape. It did require some practice, but not impossible!
