Lute - West 1996, Pt. 2 (2017 / 2026, marbled vinyl pressing in collaboration with Vinyl Digital)

• • •

West 1996, Pt. 2, the debut album by North Carolina rapper Lute, pressed on vinyl for the first time by Vinyl Digital in 2026. Originally released in September 2017, the album served as a sequel to his 2012 mixtape and was his debut project on J. Cole’s Dreamville label after being introduced on the Revenge of the Dreamers II compilation in 2015.

I first heard Lute as a feature on “Kings” from Rapper Big Pooh’s Wørds Paint Pictures EP in 2015. It took me until sometime after the release of his album to realise his presence on that song but from the moment I heard the album, I was blown away! If the first West1996 was a mixtape delving into the mind of an aspiring MC, then Pt. 2 delves a bit deeper into the life of a hardworking man who’s not only an aspiring rapper but a father to a young girl. The production is sharper, Lute sounds more confident and the features perfectly complement their respective songs. There’s a great sense of relatability, touching on hard work (“Juggin’” + “Git Up”), pressure (“Ford’s Prayer”) and jealousy (“Crabs in a Barrel”). And with the album title being named after his upbringing and when he fell in love with hip-hop, hearing songs + lyrics from OutKast, Goodie Mob and Slum Village interpolated here and there was the perfect touch, really amplifying the album further!

I used to have West 1996, Pt. 2 on repeat crazy when it first dropped , so when Lute + Vinyl Digital announced pressings for both this album and Gold Mouf, I knew I had to get a copy! I went with the marbled variant which looks even more stunning in real life, and the OBI was absolutely well done! The vinyl played fairly well from start to finish and I was left reminded of how great this album still is🥹🔥

A brilliant debut album which worked as a perfect introduction for new fans at the time! Glad to finally have this in my collection🔥🔥
