First official half marathon in the books! 🏅 13.1 miles in 2:03:34. My heart is full… My legs have asked me not to move today lol, but that’s ok.

There was a time when one mile felt like a lot. Crossing this finish line reminded me what can happen when you keep showing up, even on the days you don’t feel like it. I’m proud of this one, real live🙏🏾

Thank you so much DC Half and Pacers, for an amazing race and an experience I’ll never forget. And to all my folks who showed up, cheered, checked on me, ran with me, or sent encouragement, y’all have no idea how much that meant. Having people in your corner makes those hard miles a little easier. Love y’all🫶🏾

More miles to go, this is only the beginning 🏃🏾‍♂️💨

YOU. VS. YOU. Move Different. 🟠♾️

Special s/o to 📷 @datmandeon for the pix. You went crazy bro, much appreciated 🫡 🐐🐐🐐

I’m always telling people, if we didn’t live in Highland Square, I wouldn’t want to live in Akron.

It’s the most artsy area, the most lgbtq+ friendly area, the only walkable area, the place where Alcoholics Anonymous began, and where a woman lived in a tree to stop its destruction. It’s where a Navy Veteran self-immolated to protest the current president.

It’s where we used to eat potato cones at Dodie’s and burritos at Two Amigos, shop at Sparkle Market, see shows at Annabelle’s, get books from the old, dark, Highland Square Library, and have Mike cut our hair at the Highland Barber Shop. It’s where we helped the elderly women get from their cars to the hair salon, got pierced at Good Life, checked out fish at Two Turtles, bought vintage at Revival, and got things fixed at Highland Shoe Repair. It’s where the theater has managed to stay open through recessions, pandemics, and so many owners. Up until last year, it’s where we bought our records from Dave at Square Records. It’s where we lived in an apartment for about 17 years.

Now, it’s where we buy groceries at Mustard Seed, get books from the new, light and open Highland Square Library, buy vintage at Highland Throwbacks, and stretch out at Yoga Squared. It’s where we still stop in to see Jim at Angel Falls every now and then. It’s where we bought our house and where we still love our neighbors.

It’s Porchrokr and the scores of bands that play our neighborhood on one day every August.

Lately, it’s violence at bars, which is only new if you’re new to the area. Like anywhere else, the Square has had its ups and downs. We lost Rich Swirsky, but we got Fran. We lost the Highland Square Festival, but got Porchrokr. There are losses and there are gains, and through it all, it’s still the only place in Akron I’ll ever want to be.

These are Highland Square Festival shirts I picked up at an estate sale on Sand Run a few years ago. I bought all of them, just as I bought Mike’s Highland Barber sign - which hangs proudly in our living room.
