Summer in Alaska part: 2
I just finished up my first season in southeast Alaska and I feel pretty blessed to have spent the summer in such an epic place. I always say the coolest people I ever meet are usually in the coolest places, typically at the end of the road or in this case 100s of miles past the end of the road. I lived in a small remote boardwalk town of 98 people called pelican. The town grows by about 30 people every may when a group of guys and gals report to work @highlinerlodge for the season. Many of these people have became close friends. There’s something about a like minded group of dream chasing fisherman working their asses off together all summer that brings a group together and makes it feel like a family. The scenery of southeast Alaska mixed with the world class fishing mixed with a bunch of fishy dudes from all over the world who are simply just looking for the next big bite make me want to come back to this place time and time again. I also can’t get over how sick big halibut are, my new favorite species. I have a pretty cool video coming soon of us catching the 350lb 86” halibut that is featured a couple times in this post

Day 4 of 4 in Alaska. Glassy seas. Quiet fish. 😅 The bite slowed down, but after three incredible days of filling the fish boxes, the boys traded fishing rods for fillet knives and got plenty of practice gutting and gilling today’s catch. That time of the year!

Why do men go looking for adventure and solitude in places far away from everything? I’ve been asking myself that question this week.

As we were heading back in on the stern of the boat in Alaska, it hit me. A few things. Peace. Focus. Growth.

Peace in the surroundings of this beautiful state. The views and landscape here are one of a kind. Focus because when you do not have many options of things to do, your mind slows down. You focus on the task at hand. Growth, because sometimes those tasks are hard. They push you out of your comfort zone, both physically and mentally.

That is where growth happens. And I think men need that. I think we all chase that in a lot of different ways.

Turning 50 has had me thinking a lot this week, too. As much as we try to compress things or make things happen sooner or bigger, they seem to happen at the right time.

Good reminder that we are not in control of much in this life. Things happen faster, bigger, smaller, and differently for each one of us. We each have a predetermined journey designed by God. Letting go of things I cannot control has always been a belief, yet sometimes it is easier said than done.

Another thing this trip reminded me of: Special places start with people. @highlinerlodge is a prime example of that. They are a four-hour ferry ride from civilization, and the experience they provide is mind-blowing with the resources they have.

That only happens because of their people. And it starts with the owner. You can see it in his words and his actions. You can see it in the way he treats his team. And the team reflects that in the experience they create.

No matter how far away you are, or how big or small you are, culture and people are always the most important thing in creating a successful experience.

Lastly, one of the best parts of this trip for me was getting to spend this time with my son as he continues to grow up. Giving him different experiences. Different perspectives. And getting him around amazing people. That part means a lot to me.

For this great group of guys and me this week, that place was Pelican, Alaska.
