Every post-it note in this photo is her father's handwriting. Illinois photographer Hilary Higgins (@hilaryhiggins) made this portrait of her mother six months after his passing, surrounded by the notes and the yellow daisies he brought her every anniversary.

Across personal, editorial, and commercial work, she's spent 20 years helping people see themselves the way their loved ones do.

Her billboard is now on display in Illinois as part of The Fifty.

Today marks one year since we lost my Dad.

He was undeniably cool, generous, talented, and one of the most fun people to be around. He was also humble. Incredibly humble. An Irishman through and through.

He was the funniest guy in the room without trying to be. He didn't have to try. He just was.

He was a father figure in many ways to many people over the years, but I always felt like the lucky one. I got to call him Dad. The best Girl Dad there ever was.

His belief in me held me steady through the shakiest times. His humor and playfulness made me feel free and brave — full of wonder, even when things were hard. His integrity was simple and unshakable: he never judged anyone by their worst moment.

My Dad was quiet and proud. He built friendships that lasted over 50 years, and put the work in to keep them. He taught me to look for people I could admire for who they were, not what they had or where they came from. He could spot fakeness a mile away, and did so often.

He treated my mother with love and respect. I never once heard him raise his voice at her in anger. Or at me, for that matter. We were cherished. In 11 years of illness, she never left his side. She is my superhero.

Pat Higgins was, indeed, a wonderful man. A wonderful father, husband, friend, uncle, athlete, coach, teacher and human being. If you're looking to feel close to him or honor him, you can do so by showing up for the people you love and treating one another with patience, dignity, humor and curiosity. That was his way. His strength of character is his legacy.

He will always be with me and I'm very open to talking about him. I know he meant a lot to a lot of people, and to each person, whether we’ve met or not, I thank you. Please keep telling me old stories about how cool he was. Every one has been a joy.

Love you, Daddio. Rest well. 💚
