Yo puedo. Yo voy a lograrlo. @waska.amazonia Gracias, gracias, gracias, universo. Cotopaxi, Ecuador 🇪🇨 5.897 m s. n. m. 14/08/26 5:58 a. m. #waskajourney

It’s been quite a while since I’ve made an edit, but this one warranted it. The last two weeks have been a whirl-wind, from hard work in the jungle at Waska to climbing to new heights. I want to thank everyone who placed their trust in us and came along on this incredible journey, sharing these experiences with you all has been a true honor. More than a decade ago when I first came to Ecuador I looked up at the snow-capped volcanos in total awe. Seeing Cotopaxi tower above Quito, one of the world’s highest capital cities, left me inspired. As the years passed I learned more about the ground-breaking expeditions and discoveries that occurred in the shadow of this volcano - the French Geodesic expedition (Le Condomine), Humboldt’s revelations, Simon Bolivar’s liberation of Latin America and many more. I knew one day when the time was right I needed to climb these mountains too. Finally that time came. The moments we experienced in Papallacta, the Ilinizas, Rumiñahui and Cotopaxi have left me stunned. I could say so much about these last couple weeks, but will just share a passage from my journal about the summit: “The steep slope rose out of our headlights and into the night sky, the glistening glacier blending directly into the twinkling stars. As dawn broke, depth and color crept into our two-dimensional world. Across the western slopes breaking lines of clouds gusted by at over 125 km/hr, bracketing the colors of first light like a stop-motion film. The transition was unreal, emerging from a spot of light in the dark into one of the most expansive views I’ve ever experienced, our tiny bodies dwarfed by infinite matter stretched out above and below us - earth, wind, ice and the flaming sun, I’ve never felt so connected to the elements that create us. #waskaamazonía #cotopaxi #ecuador #tours #montañas

19,300 feet up and still not the highest PH student Final 🇪🇨 Adventure - Cotopaxi The 2nd tallest mountain in Ecuador, the 4th farthest point from the center of the Earth, and one of the largest active volcanoes in the world, Cotopaxi is an intimidating monster. That only really lasts until you look into how technical and difficult it is to climb and almost every source tells you that it just takes stamina and nothing else to climb due to it having relatively calm weather and a clear path. And that is true until you decide to climb it on an anomaly of a day, a day where wind gusts are around 3x stronger than that of a normal day, wind speeds that almost reach hurricane conditions, and winds strong enough to scare the guides forcing many to turn back early. With these conditions, Cotopaxi becomes even harder than many of its much more technical neighbors. Stats: Final elevation: 19,347 ft Elevation gain: ~3,500 ft Distance: 8.8 km (according to an outdated map) Time: 9.5 hours (12:30 - 10:00) Constant wind speed at Refugio: 110 kmh (according to one guide, no official data to back up but a very reasonable claim) Rocks consumed: Way too many First views of the Refugio as we approach (All of the red, black, and gray are all loose rocks that got kicked back up in the wind) We begin hiking to the Refugio where we’ll try to sleep from 7:00 to 11:30 to prepare for a 12:30 send off the next morning Danger zones of the mountain 🏠 - refugio (starting point) 🟢 - not really dangerous zone 🟠 - kinda dangerous zone 🔴 - I think dangerous zone I forgot what all of the descriptions said Hard to see, but clouds getting blown over the caldera as we made it to the top of Cotopaxi The view from part of our summit After we made it to the summit, the guide told me to turn around and that I had to lead us back down the mountain, it was very windy and not very fun View of the recently risen sun and caldera of Cotopaxi as we reached the true summit, taken by the tour guide I made it to the peak, but I couldn’t find any flares did I break the game? Mandatory wildlife - someone said it is an Andean gull Way too underexposed, but it does show the bird better

Día siete en Ecuador 🇪🇨🧗🏔️🦅🌬️ Today we tackled our second summit, El Volcán Rumiñahui, sitting at roughly 15,000 feet within Cotopaxi National Park. Kacie wasn’t feeling well and decided to take the day to rest, which was wise given our Cotopaxi summit attempt later this week. Starting in Limpiopungo, our fellowship traveled 9 miles roundtrip through windswept meadows overlooking stunning Andean valleys. Once we hit the scree field, it was a tough rock scramble to the peak. The wind and cold barreled down on us the entire time, making our stay at the peak a short one. We slipped and slid our way back down the mountain to the valley’s edge, where we were greeted by 8+ Andean condors soaring overhead in beautiful arcing formations. The clouds parted enough for the glaciers of Cotopaxi to shine down on us as we made our final decent back down. What an incredibly challenging but rewarding day. Tomorrow we rest and prepare our mind and bodies for the final hike up Cotopaxi. #cotopaxi

Some encounters become memories that last a lifetime… Days of minga, hikes, nighttime explorations, and experiences that connect us with nature, with one another, and with ourselves. It’s beautiful to see how the years go by and our #waskafamily continues to grow, creating meaningful connections and moments that leave a lasting mark. A special thank you to @kwhill , who has led these experiences for so many years, inspiring and transforming the lives of children and young people along the way. What a joy it is to keep walking this path together. 🌿 #waskatours2026 #viajesconsentido #waskajourney

This hike was definitely harder than a 10k Acclimatization hike 2 🇪🇨 - Illiniza Norte Los Illinizas were once a large volcano that was destroyed in an explosion ~600 years ago leaving behind two connected mountains. The hike we did was supposed to be to the summit of the north mountain with a height of 16,800 feet above sea level, but due to problems with our permits we were unable to hike past a lake in the old caldera. Stats: Distance: ~8 miles Max Elevation: ~15,800 feet Elevation gained: ~2,800 feet The view of Rumiñawi—a neighboring mountain and our next hike—from the parking lot The peak of Cotopaxi—2nd talked mountain in Ecuador and 4th closest point to the sun—from the parking lot As the clouds began to move, the entire peak of Cotopaxi was briefly visable As we descended, the base of Cotopaxi was showing with its distinct red tint As we climbed higher, we were able to see the cloud forests that extend almost all the way to the coast of Ecuador A cool bluff (I think, idk geology) that extrudes from the Illinizas Walking back through the final stretch Caleb aura farming Struggling to make it through the caldera A friendly conversation More of Caleb Escaping from the mist Tuna, our patron animal for the hike These mountains are large enough to form their own clouds that stay around the mountains themselves These mountains are kinda misty A view of the peak of Illiniza Norte from close to where the summit trail starts El lago verde, this lake formed at the base of Illiniza sur inside the large caldera Peak reference The “trail” that took us from the refugio to the green lake and spanned the caldera A view of Illiniza Sur before it was engulfed by clouds
