. Capturing Stills on Set is all about finding the magic moments…  A big part of that is creating them with the cast in the midst of all the incredible chaos, for a quick pull aside where you have only seconds to do so.   Other times it’s about catching that fleeting expression during a take that locks in the storytelling still from an ongoing scene.   Sometimes it’s just about having fun with the personalities of the leads, and playing with them to come up with shots that highlight their personalities and interactions to the various storylines.

These can be off to the side of the set, or in the middle of it with dozens of people watching and waiting around, or occasionally when I specifically ask for the set to do so before the action moves on…

That’s when it really counts to have the trust of the Director & 1st AD, when they know you can do that job without throwing off the hyper critical timing of a few hundred people.

It’s a trust that can only be earned over time, and it’s never taken for granted.  So being an effective Unit Still Photographer requires you to be an intuitive people person, not just with the big name leads in front of the lens, but the entire production crew behind the lens while it happens.

It’s always a challenge, but it’s a challenge I love to step up to, and with my personal goal being photographs that really catch not just the characters in the moment, but the personality of the actors playing them as well - all while weaving the desired storyline throughout the frame.  The real reward comes when those images are chosen and promoted by the network to market the personality of the production itself, using the strategic images I captured that appeal to viewers emotions and sense of adventure, that are then published internationally to extensively market the TV Series of Feature in all possibilities of media and interviews.
