This past week my son Arlo and I built the screen porch. I was surprised by how by how much I like it and what it added to the feel of the house.

I had decided early on to never attach a deck or porch to house. This porch is on an independent slab foundation, and the only connection, so to speak, is the flashing we added to the wall when we did the house siding. The porch metal roof runs directly under this flashing, but both the house and porch are free to move as the seasons change, ground freezes, ect. There are no fasteners connecting the two buildings. The porch roof beam sits on 3 4x4 vertical posts that are anchored to the slab with simpson strong tie 1/2”x8” Titen bolts. They are just in compression and more than strong enough for the job. The wall framing has double bottom plates, that sit on white oak blocks, holding the spruce frame 1.5” off the concrete slab. Plenty of space for water to drain out from under. The exterior has 3’ corrugated steel panels for the lower siding, pine tarred hemlock above, hanging past the slab edge to keep wind and blowing snow out. The windows are all the same big square RO that the house has, only these have removable screens and polycarbonate panes, not windows. Inside walls are hemlock. Arlo is doing the siding while i am here in the shop. There is power and lights via conduit buried in the foundation, no holes in the house walls.

The use for this porch was for farm chores: drying beans, corn, onions, garlic, chicken and game processing, wood storage, dealing with produce, bike storage in season ect. Not a hang out space. Having a dry place to work outside is key. #alpineluddites #diy #carpentry #building #porch #porchlife #hub #homedesign #homestead #vermont #vermontforreal #vermontbyvermonters #peacham

No idea what went wrong. This was the very last wall to go up. Nice to see the wall wasn’t damaged, now who has a telehandler I can borrow? Hahahaha #alpineluddites #carpenter #carpentry #luddites #ludditecarpenters #vermont #diy #peacham
