What happens when you combine health fanaticism with corporate exploitation? Our intro to Symbio is thru a panicked employee, forced to make a presentation unprepared. It leads not just to her disappearance, but her mom Tammy (Charin Alvarez) comes asking questions & making uncomfortable accusations.

Meanwhile, struggling musician Luke #TerrenceCarey is getting pressured by his GF Elyse #PaigeBourne to “get a real job.” A former bandmate of his, Andy (Jesse Kendall) turned in his instrument to work for Symbio & got a 6 figure signing bonus, salary & perks. So, Luje goes for an interview.

But there is no interview, CEO Kelsey #ClaireMcFadden flat out hires him, not giving him a chance to back out. But the really weird thing is the corporate obsession with their own kombucha, which everyone drinks & when Luke balks, his job is on the line. So, he caves.

While his productivity goes thru the roof, there are signs that not everything is right. He’s losing time. He has to go to the bathroom more. And when he does (or even throws up) there are bugs & worms in there.

Elyse starts to worry about him. She works in a lab & takes samples of the kombucha, finding it to be unlike any other. She meets with Tammy, who’s convinced it’s a company of vampires. The truth is worse than that. When Luke finally meets the owner of the company, nothing will be same again. He may lose more than his soul to the company, but his very life, unless Elyse can save him.

They call this a horror comedy, but it’s more of a horror satire. I didn’t know any of the actors before, but they’re good here. It did well on the festival circuit, where I think we can safely say there’s a new horror category involving evil corporations now. Can be found in Screambox #screeningoftheday
