A rainy morning update. Did you know in 1897 there were nine single-story houses on the 300 block of W. Orange Street? The one pictured is the last standing.

Swipe to see a snowy photo I took in January 2022. Looks like the owners got a new roof. 🔨

This historic townhouse is tucked away on S. Duke St. in Old Town, part of an award-winning preservation project. In the 1970s and 80s, several blocks of dilapidated buildings were saved from demolition, revitalizing the area. The project earned national acclaim, with the National Institute of Architects highlighting it in their Dec. 1978 journal. By rescuing these buildings, Old Town not only preserved a piece of Lancaster’s history but also sparked a trend in renewal that the city continues to celebrate.

Built in 1898 as a classic brick-and-shingle Victorian for the prominent Wohlsen family, this home was once identical to the neighboring house on N. Charlotte St. In the 1920s, following a world tour, the Wohlsens remodeled it with stucco, arches, and a Tudor facade. The exterior has remained largely unchanged since, through various owners.

Over the years, the home has hosted cooking classes, Sunday dances, and was featured on the Pennsylvania Academy of Music’s Music in Every Home tour. The former carriage house is now a separate residence on Concord Street.

This one and a half story house, located at the corner of Water and Grant streets, is one of Lancaster’s most recognizable landmarks. It has been meticulously restored with historic authenticity.

In the era when it was built, many people couldn’t read, so businesses were identified by unique signs, such as the famous Grape Hotel, marked by a cluster of grapes. In the same tradition, the Little Haus is marked by a hand-painted sign featuring a tulip which can be seen in the second photo!

A charming Woodlawn storybook Tudor built the 1930s.📚The wood door and the subtle brick patterns on the chimney and facade are so thoughtfully crafted, you might overlook them. Are you a fan of this style?

This historic one-story frame house, likely completed in 1817, sits at the northern edge of the SoWe project area. Tied to the prominent Eberman family, it reflects the Germanic-style architecture popular during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was built by John Eberman III, son of famous clockmaker John Eberman Jr. For more on the home and its fascinating past, visit sowelancaster.org.
