“I see teachers who know and care deeply about their students, and a forward-thinking curriculum that seeks to develop both heart and mind.” We are halfway through our annual fund, and community members have been sharing why they give. Read this letter (link in bio) from a Meridian parent, trustee, and volunteer about why supporting the Monarch Fund matters to him and his family. Thank you for reading and considering support for the Monarch Fund to benefit our program, faculty development, tuition assistance, and more!

PreK students love visiting the Tilth gardens around the Good Shepherd Center, and last week they got a hands-on lesson in the Children’s Learning Garden! It was a fantastic way to kick off PreK’s Community Unit, where they will be exploring the people, places, and jobs that help our communities thrive. Thank you, Tilth!

A century of music, dancing, celebrations, and community gatherings. If the walls of South Park Hall could talk, they would have 100 years of stories to tell. Located at 1253 S. Cloverdale Street, South Park Hall is celebrating a remarkable milestone in 2026: its 100th anniversary. Established in 1926, the historic dance hall has been part of South Park for generations and continues to serve as a place where people come together for music, dancing, celebrations, and community activities. A Gathering Place Since 1926 South Park Hall was built during the 1920s as a neighborhood dance hall. Today, the space still features a large dance floor and stage—a reminder that music and dancing have been part of the building’s identity for a century. Like South Park itself, however, the Hall has experienced many changes over the decades. After sitting underused for a period of time, the space was renovated in 2017 by local entrepreneurs Heidi Herr and Corina Luckenbach, who worked to bring the historic gathering space back to life while preserving its character. Since then, South Park Hall has hosted everything from weddings and private celebrations to community activities, classes, live music, and dancing. Buildings can tell us a lot about a neighborhood. For South Park Hall, its history reflects something familiar about South Park itself: a community that changes, adapts, preserves its history, and continues finding reasons to come together. From the people who danced there generations ago to the families, neighbors, musicians, and community organizations using the space today, thousands of footsteps have crossed its dance floor. Happy 100th anniversary, South Park Hall! Here’s to the stories already written—and the many more still to come. Only in South Park — celebrating the people, places, businesses, and stories that make our neighborhood unique. . . . . . #seattlehistory #seattlelifestyle #historicalbuildings

The KinderGARDEN looks beautiful, thanks to our amazing friends at Historic Seattle and our own kindergarten horticulturists. It is such a joy for students to see themselves as important parts of our community and stewards of this space. Check out the KinderGarden across from Meridian Playground as their flowers grow! Thank you, @historicseattle for this hands-on project for our Monarchs!

I’m very honored to be playing The Good Shepherd Center this December. This historic performance space was built in 1906 and is stewarded by @historicseattle, an organization committed to preserving historic spaces in Seattle. I’m excited to play some new & old songs. I’m working on having some special guests join me. I’m so happy to be sharing a bill with Brenna Bruce. I like her songs a lot. Following a path of curiosity and introspection, her music moves with a quiet power, balancing sharpness and tenderness with an understood patience.  At this time about 40 tickets remain. I hope to see you there. Link to tickets in my bio.

Preserving Our Past | Seattle Fire Department History History has a way of reminding us that the department we serve today was built on the dedication, courage, and sacrifice of generations before us. I recently had the privilege of sitting down with retired Battalion Chief Frank Harshfield and exploring an incredible collection of Seattle Fire Department history. Spread across the table were original photographs, newspaper clippings, historical scrapbooks, commendations, and documents dating back more than a century. Among these records were accounts of devastating Seattle fires, firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice, and remarkable acts of courage that might otherwise be lost to time. One particularly meaningful part of this research is discovering the stories of firefighters whose deaths may have been connected to their service but whose names are not currently included on our department’s published line-of-duty death roster. These accounts deserve careful research and verification. Every photograph has a story. Every newspaper clipping preserves a moment in time. And behind every name is a firefighter, a family, and a legacy. As Historian of the Walter Kilgore Seattle Firefighters Honor Guard, I consider it a privilege to help document and preserve these stories for future generations. A special thank you to retired BC Harshfield for sharing his time, knowledge, and this remarkable collection. We cannot honor those who came before us if we allow their stories to be forgotten. More to come as the research continues.
