Congratulations to UWA Publishing authors Julianne Negri and Helena Pantsis on being named winners in the 2026 Queensland Literary Awards! Julianne Negri has won the Young Adult Book Award, supported by The University of Queensland, for her young adult verse novel The Belly of a Wolf. Judges’ Comments: Immersive and evocative, this coming-of-age verse novel follows fifteen-year-old Red as she navigates the sudden death of her best friend, Wolf. Negri masterfully weaves a classic fairy tale, high school heartbreak and indie rock into an unforgettable and extraordinary work of literature. Helena Pantsis has won the Steele Rudd Award for a Short Story Collection for Mother Salad. Judges’ Comments: From the opening story, ‘Cottonmouth’, Mother Salad stands out as a masterful collection, skilfully deploying its surreal elements while also revealing the rich inner worlds of its characters. Helena Pantsis is a remarkable talent with an excellent command of narrative voice and a brilliant imagination. I have a love hate relationship with short story collections and an even strong love hate relationship with writing in the form. They remind me of high school and writing comparative essays about The Yellow Wallpaper and Tim Winton. Since I am trying to get better at writing short stories, I’ve been making the effort to read more. There are some fantastic short story collections out there, most of my favourites including interconnected that weave together a larger narrative. Do you have a favourite short story or short story collection?

Congratulations to UWA Publishing authors Julianne Negri and Helena Pantsis who have been shortlisted in the Queensland Literary Awards. Julianne Negri's verse novel, The Belly of a Wolf, has been shortlisted in the Young Adult category. The judges' commented: "After the death of her best friend, Red is emerging from the belly of her grief and learning how to live again. Through lyrical verse and allegory, Negri’s mesmerising and rhythmic tale captivates in emotion, style and form. A powerful, haunting and universally resonant tale of loss, love, music and friendship." Helena Pantsis' short story collection, Mother Salad, has been shortlisted for the Steele Rudd Award for a short story collection (Biennial Award). The judges' commented: "Mother Salad is an exhilarating collection with flashes of the macabre: in these stories, people are often different from who they initially seem to be. Showing a flair for experimentation, Helena Pantsis offers a fresh perspective on transformation, loss and relationship dynamics." The winners of the awards will be announced at the Queensland Literary Awards ceremony as part of the Brisbane Writers Festival on 8 October 2026. #QLA2026 #TheBellyofaWolf #JulianneNegri #MotherSalad #HelenaPantsis #uwapublishing

Little wrap up post, had such a blast taking part in the Parallel Panels graphic novelist workshop organised by @melcityoflit For a couple months a group of ten cartoonists from Naarm/Melbourne, Australia and Bucheon, Korea met for a weekly virtual round table. Host Bernard Caleo spearheaded a really fun activity where we each made a comic page and removed the text, which was then sent to everyone. We then added our own text, making up new stories mad lib-style, and then each week two artists would be picked and everyone shared their interpretation of their page. (Check out both versions of mine on my feed, I’d love to see what new text you come up with!) It was so interesting how some pages seemed to steer everyone to write very similar things, but others would send us all off in completely different directions. Honestly it was more a psychology exercise than anything. I'm so grateful to have taken part in such a unique cross-cultural workshop, and I can't wait to get to Bucheon one day to meet all our new friends in person. I highly recommend checking out everyone's work (click the image!), so many unique styles and stories. 친구들, 곧 만나요! #bucheon #melbourne #comic #australiancomics

what a privilege it was to chat to such talented authors @koraly_poet & @hlnpnts at the greek-australian writers festival. we spoke about womanhood, motherhood, and poetry and surrealism as an expression of a fractured and sometimes chaotic female identity. we spoke on the rise of conservatism, greek-australian identity and marginalisation of women in personal and public spheres. check out the authors’ work to indulge in some truly rich literature.
