At just 12 years old, Haley Stark survived a spinal stroke that left her partially paralyzed and fighting for her life. Today, she is a powerful example of resilience, disability empowerment, and overcoming adversity. In this moving episode of Joy of the Hang, Haley joins her mom, Sharon Stevenson, to share how surviving a childhood stroke reshaped her identity—and her future. After losing the use of her dominant right hand, Haley retrained her brain, adapted to life with a disability, and refused to let limitations define her. A Harvard University graduate, Haley earned a dual degree in Psychology and Theater, blending mental health insight with creative expression. Along the way, she discovered the transformative power of improv and stand-up comedy, using humor as a tool for healing, confidence, and connection. This episode explores: * Life after a spinal stroke * Navigating disability and identity * The psychology of resilience and adaptability * How comedy, improv, and laughter support mental health * Redefining success after trauma * Turning survival into purpose From hospital rooms to Harvard classrooms to comedy stages, Haley’s journey is a reminder that joy, belonging, and confidence can be rebuilt—one brave choice at a time. ✨ A hopeful conversation for stroke survivors, people living with disabilities, caregivers, parents, and anyone learning how to rise after life-altering challenges.

We had such a lovely time at The Painted Burro yesterday for our TDM Class of 2025 Senior Dinner! This is our largest senior class yet, and we were so excited to gather together to celebrate them and all of their accomplishments. We can’t wait to meet all of their families and loved ones next week at the Family Reception! TDM seniors from the class of 2025 sit at a table together

LAST-DITCH SALE!!! WATCH OUR SENIORS DO IMPROV COMEDY BEFORE THEY MOVE ON TO REAL JOBS!!!!! 😮 That’s right, folks, the cruel wheel of time keeps turning, and some of our improvisers have to “graduate” and “make money”. TLA improv is memorializing their selfish decision with our best improv show ever on Friday, April 25th at 8PM in Science Center E.

April’s first Senior Spotlight shines on Haley Stark of Quincy House! Why TDM? The TDM program truly values process over product and has dared me to pursue my wildest ideas at every turn! What are you working on now? I just finished directing for my second season with the Lowell House Opera, and I wrote my THESIS (scary, fun, exciting)! My thesis is a paratheatrical novel that spans the collapse of ritualistic tradition through a secretive brotherhood’s initiation rites and their unintended consequences. Its draft is on Amazon for a brief time ("The Earthen Brothers"), so check it out! If you could invite anyone in the world to dinner, who would it be? I would invite my improv troupe to dinner if I could invite anyone...& I mean it. I'm very lucky to make art with them :). What are your plans after Harvard? I'm going to Columbia to get my MFA in Directing! :) IG: @Hmstark, @TLAimprov A headshot for TDM senior Haley Stark
