the new west leaf of the historic Lake Street Bridge has arrived, and you can see it from the west end of the Chicago Riverwalk or from upper Wacker and Lake

🏗️ Lake Street Bridge was the world’s first double-deck, double-leaf bascule bridge and the section being replaced dates to the bridge’s original opening on November 6, 1916

🚆 this bridge is a key part of Chicago’s transportation infrastructure with CTA Green and Pink Line trains running on the upper level and vehicles crossing below

⚖️ the new steel bridge leaf weighs approximately ONE MILLION pounds

✨ Lake Street Bridge is getting a major upgrade while preserving its historic character

🚢 the new section traveled by barge along the Chicago River before crews began the process of replacing the original west leaf

On Saturday, the Ride Illinois Board of Directors held their quarterly meeting in Chicago. 10 of 15 directors attended the meeting in-person and four attended virtually 👥

A big thank you to @hntb for providing the space and technology for this important meeting! 😍

As a nonprofit organization with board members spread out around the state, these quarterly meetings serve as an opportunity for directors to make key decisions, discuss past successes and challenges, strategize for the future, and build rapport. The board meets in locations that are served by @amtrak. Past in-person meeting locations include: Normal, Urbana, Effingham, and Springfield 🚆🤝

Board members are Ride Illinois’ most ardent volunteers! They dutifully serve on committees, impart wisdom to increase impact, represent Ride Illinois at outreach events, mentor and assist staff, and promote the organization to their personal and professional networks. In recent years, the Ride Illinois board has shifted from a group of enthusiastic bicyclists to accomplished professionals from a variety of professions and backgrounds – who also enjoy riding a bicycle 🙌🚴
