12 years ago, I had the fortune of bumping into Brian Burke while I was working in Calgary for the summer. A decade later, it was an honour to introduce him to my Hockey Hardware game at the 2024 Carnegie Initiative in Toronto. Burke has deep roots in hockey, as a former front office executive with various @nhl teams, including the Vancouver @canucks, @anaheimducks, Toronto @mapleleafs, Calgary @nhlflames, and Pittsburgh @penguins . Beyond hockey business, Burke has tremendously helped build and grow the sport we love by breaking down barriers so more people can play, feel welcomed, and included. In 2012, Burke and his son, Patrick, launched @youcanplayteam, and over 10 years later, Burke was also at the forefront of the @thepwhlofficial being established, in his role as Executive Director with the @pwhlpa. It is great - and no surprise - to see Brian Burke being named an inductee into the Hockey Hall of Fame for the Builder Category in the Class of 2026. Congratulations, and well deserved!

Sometimes, local independent designers offer us copies of their games to include in our library. Here are some of our most recent additions: @hockeyhardware was inspired by fantasy hockey leagues. Collect stats, avoid adversity and win trophies to become the champion in this game! Loot Lagoon from @lavaoctopusgames is a family game that is easy to pick up and play. As crabs you'll need to scuttle with strategy to steal the shiny - but look out for that octopus! Race for the Pole! and To the Lifeboats! both feature custom woodwork by their creator, Martin Redfern. Re-enact these historical events while enjoying the beautiful pieces. Thanks to all these designers for helping to give our game collection a local, Ottawa flare!

Hockey Hardware is officially in the mail and on its way to our @kickstarter Backers across Canada🇨🇦 and the USA🇺🇸! Keep an eye on your mailboxes for it to land soon, if it hasn’t already arrived. This week has been a busy one fulfilling hundreds of orders. Thank you to my wife, @katmurphyxo for all her help with that. Honestly, it’s a surreal feeling being at this late stage of the project, and finally getting these games out to Backers. It’s been a journey of almost 7 years since I first started working on this idea in late November 2018. It’s a dream come true. I’m so grateful to everyone who has supported me along this creative journey, and has supported @hockeyhardware coming to life. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. My goal with this project has always been to create a fun, entertaining, high quality made in Canada hockey tabletop game, and I’m confident Hockey Hardware achieves this. I’m also very much looking forward to hearing player feedback in the coming days as Backers get to play it. Although we still have some local pick-ups scheduled, we are nearing the end of our Hockey Hardware Kickstarter chapter… But GOOD NEWS: Hockey Hardware is just getting started, and we are at the beginning of a new chapter to bring Hockey Hardware to market in the coming weeks. If you weren’t able to get a copy on Kickstarter, you’ll be able to buy a copy of Hockey Hardware soon. Stay tuned for more details 👀

Fun fact: One week before the writ dropped to trigger the 2025 federal election, the first order of Hockey Hardware games arrived in Ottawa from its Canadian manufacturer! Now that the federal election is behind us, Katherine and I are moving forward with fulfilling Kickstarter orders this week. Local pick-up details are being confirmed for some Backers in Ottawa and Niagara, while orders that need to be mailed are being packed and getting ready to ship. Can’t wait to get everyone their games and Hockey Hardware Kickstarter items!!!

Board games helped bring us together. Katherine and I met in 2015, and we got to really know each other over hours of playing @settlersofcatan. We developed some early feelings for each other, but then life abruptly took us apart, before eventually bringing us back together in 2020. Shortly after we started dating, I told Katherine I was working on a big project but it was under tight wraps at that time. A few months later, I revealed to her that my project was a tabletop game called Hockey Hardware. She was eager to play it, so we did. She got right into it, and we had a blast! Fast forward 3 years, Katherine and I got engaged and we married 10 months later. Almost immediately after our wedding, my planning for Hockey Hardware’s first @kickstarter campaign began. We didn’t know it then, but it was the first of what would be two Kickstarter campaigns this year. A LOT of time, energy, and sacrifices go into planning and executing these campaigns. After the first campaign fell short this past February, I went back to the drawing board, applied the many lessons learned, and launched a new and improved Kickstarter in May. 59 days later, @hockeyhardware has the support of hundreds of Backers, is fully funded on Kickstarter, and is entering its final day of the campaign. I’m also finally getting some time and space to reflect a bit. My first reflection is just how lucky I am to have Katherine as my wife on this incredible journey we’re on. It might look fun and easy at face value; but these Kickstarter campaigns are a long, intense, grind. It has been all encompassing of my free time for about 1/3 of the time we’ve been married. I am so deeply grateful and thankful for Katherine’s love, patience, care, strength, support, and understanding. A lot of her work is behind the scenes, and she has been instrumental in keeping this campaign on track and moving forward, while we both work full time jobs and try to balance everything else happening in our busy lives. I am the luckiest guy to have Katherine by my side. She’s my rock, and she’s incredible. From the bottom of my heart, thank you, Katherine. I love you.❤️

Thank you to @balsommike and The NOTL Local for keeping readers in Niagara-on-the-Lake and beyond informed about Hockey Hardware’s crowdfunding journey through not one, but two @kickstarter campaigns! I’m so proud and excited to share that at about 9:30pm EDT last night, @hockeyhardware reached and surpassed its funding goal on Kickstarter with about 60 hours remaining before the deadline. Read the full article on the NOTL Local website, and pledge now on Kickstarter to be among the first to get a copy of Hockey Hardware!

This was a really cool moment in Hockey Hardware’s first Kickstarter campaign: During the NHL All-Star Fan Fair in Toronto, I had an opportunity to meet the “Keeper of the Cup”, Phil Pritchard, and show him the game. Phil is also the Vice President, Resource Centre and Curator, of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Part of his duties include traveling with the Stanley Cup, and he is widely known for his role of walking the Stanley Cup out onto the ice to be presented to the NHL champions. Are we going to see Phil tonight bring out the Stanley Cup for the Florida Panthers? Or will the Edmonton Oilers score a victory and extend the series to Game 5? We’ll find out soon!
