Context:

Breaking was born from racialized, low-income communities where access to preventative healthcare, sports science, nutrition, and wellness education has not always been accessible for many. At the same time, injuries have often been treated as “battle scars,” with dancers expected to push through pain rather than understand, prevent, and properly recover from injury.

Through movement science, mobility, injury prevention, nutrition education, health literacy, and intergenerational knowledge exchange, we’re creating space for breakers to break smarter, stay healthier, and keep breaking which extends beyond the dance floor.

Stay tuned for the official content as we document the journey throughout this project sharing real experiences, lessons learned, challenges, breakthroughs, and everything in between.

🧠🫀Started training with @heartmath Institute 🥰 Why? 👇🏼

@holistic.shawn & I observe:

Our clients who struggle to heal all have something in common:

They have a history of trauma and/or a dysregulated nervous system (me included 🙋🏻‍♀️).

I'll repeat that: trauma and nervous system dysregulation pulls the breaks 🛑 on our ability to heal.

We work with clients who suffer from chronic illness, which in itself is a traumatic experience.

Adding this peice of the puzzle to the bigger healing picture, for many of our clients, will be invaluable.

I'll be leading the integration of HeartMath techniques & technology in our clinic! 😊

"HeartMath meditation uses breathing techniques to bring about coherence — the alignment of your physical, mental and emotional systems to work in sync"

👀 For a visual, imagine a radio... 📻

When it's signals are clear, we hear music, messages, voices 🎶

When signals are incoherent or scrambled, we hear static.

Simply put, the body needs clear messages to heal.

I am also doing my trauma-sensitive HeartMath Certification as we've noticed the demand for trauma-informed care, especially in the last few years.

"HeartMath products, tools and techniques are based on over 25 years of scientific research conducted at the HeartMath Institute on the psychophysiology of stress, emotions, and the interactions between the heart and brain. There are over 300 peer-reviewed or independent studies utilizing HeartMath techniques or technologies to achieve beneficial outcomes that have been published. "

Yes, even in Canada, you can be infected.

Have you ever:

Travelled (domestic or international) 🌎

Eaten sushi / sashimi 🍣

Eaten raw vegetables 🥦

Swam in a lakes 🌊

Garden 🌱

Touched a pet 🐶🐾

Walked barefoot in grass / rivers👣

Eaten undercooked infected meat 🥩

Interacted with small children 🧒🏻
(Teachers / parents / daycares)

... you've probably been exposed.

It's a part of life, and generally, easily treatable ( the types of parasites we have here aren't usually an immediate threat). You're unlikely to catch a brain eating amoeba or a life threatening blood fluke

However, parasitic infections are rampant and cause a lot of mystery symptoms that go undiagnosed and therefore aren't treated.

Long term, chronic infection can weaken your immune system, deplete you of essential vitamins and minerals, and make you vulnerable to other diseases.

It's something we see daily, and have been doing lots of research on in our clinic via case studies of miraculous recoveries - tied to hidden infection.

In my case, they were directly connected to my severe autoimmune condition.

While everyone is exposed to parasites (it's a part of the human gut microbiome for some people), not everyone gets "infected" where they overgrow, steal resources and cause symptoms. Some people have the defenses needed to wipe them out! Yay good stomach acid!

But, once they do take hold... it's important to support the body in their removal and track backwards in time to identify what made you a welcoming host in the first place.

As a nutritionist, I prefer real meat (not processed, fake meat)

Don't misunderstand me - I also eat plant WHOLE foods. Both meat / plants have unique nutrition profiles that are good for us - if you have the enzymes to digest them) However... fake meat (highly processed plants and fortified products) aren't equivalent nutritionally to real meat

Why I avoid fake meat:

1. HIGH IN RANCID, OXIDIZED FAT

- toxic, inflammatory, & cause damage to cells, proteins and DNA:

Unhealthy cell membranes = impaired cell to cell communication, nutrient absorption, immune function.
🥩 🐟 🫒 🥥
To repair / replace those cell membranes - you need good, clean, healing fats (fatty wild caught fish, olives, grass-fed butter, farm raised eggs, organic, cold pressed and well stored oils, grass-fed beef, well preserved nuts)

🧠 Lipids are needed for healthy cognition & brain function. Good fats (among other factors) lower your risk of neurodegenerative disease.

❤ Rancid fats are linked to heart disease & arterial damage, increased cholesterol, arterial blockages. (See list of foods above that reverse this)

⏳ Oxidative stress also makes you age faster.

2. FORTIFICATION

Personally, I rather get my nutrients from food that's closest to its natural form vs. Food that pumped with vitmains

2021 Duke University study:

"Lab analysis finds near-meat and meat not nutritionally equivalent

The greatest distinctions occurred in amino acids, dipeptides, vitamins, phenols, and types of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids found in these products.

Several metabolites known to be important to human health were found either exclusively or in greater quantities in beef, including creatine, spermine, anserine, cysteamine, glucosamine, squalene, and the omega-3 fatty acid DHA. "potentially important physiological, anti-inflammatory, and or immunomodulatory roles,"

1 of top 5 principles guiding our work #bioindividuality

When we have client sitting in front of us with a health problem, it's so important to withhold bias from forming in our minds based off a previous doctors formal diagnosis.

Bias clouds the process of scientific inquiry.

Not everyone's root cause is the same.

Not everyone feels the same.

Not everyone's symptoms look the same.

Everyone's body is different.

Every body wants different things to heal.

We chose this work, because people DO heal.

The secret...

is being able to decode what the body says it needs and when.

If we listen (and test!), we get customized answers for each person.
