💙 HELPING HAND IN ACTION! 💙

On October 15, Officer Nisman and Officer Perez of the Hollywood Police Department’s Patrol Division – Charlie Shift encountered a young family experiencing homelessness at Jefferson Park.

The family, originally from Georgia, included a father, an expectant mother, and their 11-month-old child. With the father unemployed and selling artwork to afford occasional motel stays, the family had no stable shelter or food.

Recognizing their need, the officers stepped in through the Hollywood FOP HEROES Foundation’s Helping Hand Program, providing temporary hotel accommodations, groceries, and connections to additional community resources.

👏 We are proud of Officers Nisman and Perez for going beyond the badge to help a family in need!

💙 HELPING HAND IN ACTION 💙

While on patrol, Officer Idarraga and Officer Saltzman of the Hollywood Police Department Beach Unit encountered a single mother from Missouri and her children, ranging in age from 3 to 15, who were going through an incredibly difficult time.

After losing her job and struggling to support her family, the mother came to South Florida hoping to find employment and an opportunity to get back on her feet. With nowhere else to go, she and her children had been sleeping on the sand while she continued searching for work. One of her children is also special needs and non-verbal.

Officers Idarraga and Saltzman saw a family that needed more than a traditional police response. They needed a Helping Hand.

Through the Hollywood FOP HEROES Foundation’s Helping Hand Program, we were able to immediately step in and provide temporary shelter, food, clothing, and other essential necessities—giving this mother and her children a safe place to stay while they are connected with additional resources.

The goal is to bridge the gap until the Broward Homeless Outreach Task Force and community partners can step in and help this family continue their journey toward stability and recovery.

And there is a special connection to this story.

Fun fact: The Helping Hand Program was actually created after being inspired by Officer Idarraga and an act of kindness he showed to a family in need back in 2024. What started with one officer recognizing an opportunity to help has continued to evolve into a program that gives our officers the resources to make a real difference when they encounter someone in crisis.

Now, two years later, Officer Idarraga is once again demonstrating exactly what inspired the program in the first place.

Sometimes policing isn't about making an arrest or writing a report. Sometimes it's simply about helping someone when they need it most.

The Hollywood FOP HEROES Foundation is proud to support our officers and our community through programs like Helping Hand.

Last night, two environmental champions and people I consider to be mentors were honored for their service at the Broward Sierra Club’s annual gala: Leah Weisburd and Commissioner Beam Furr.

Leah has been an incredible force that continues to fight tirelessly for our environment. Under her leadership, the Broward Sierra Junior Team has flourished and engaged young people from across the county in advocating for our natural world.

Beam has served on the City of Hollywood Commission, too many advisory boards, committees, and task forces to count, and is now nearing the end of his time on the Broward County Commission. An environmentalist at heart, he has been one of our community’s greatest fighters for clean air, clean water, and a resilient future.

Thank you Leah, Beam, the Broward Sierra Club, and everyone who continues to show up to make sure we protect South Florida for generations to come 🌎

THE SECRET IS OUT. 🍷

We probably should have thought this through a little more.

Introducing THE SECRET SIP SOCIETY — a monthly gathering of curious drinkers, interesting bottles and very questionable company.

Only 150 Founding Members will be admitted.

And every one of them gets a number.

001–150.

Numbers are issued in the order you join.

Which means, as of right now…

001 belongs to nobody.

Doors open at 5PM TODAY.

First one in gets first crack at it.

Membership is $99/month and includes curated wine, tastings, member privileges, suspiciously good deals and several things our attorneys would probably prefer we describe more carefully.

And then there’s November 14.

We’re having a protest.

About wine.

More on that later.

For now:

150 PEOPLE.
150 NUMBERS.
ONE SECRET SIP SOCIETY.

Who gets 001?

📍 The Vintage
1955 Harrison Street
Downtown Hollywood

Good wine. Bad decisions. Great company.

Councilmember Reinstein attended an interactive art and climate workshop at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center to join the discussion and to learn and listen as to how Broward County is working to build community resilience to climate impacts and to see how we, in the City of Plantation, can be a part of the solution.

If we are not a part of this conversation and if we are not part of this solution, then we are contributing to the flooding and contributing to the problems.

The discussion focused on building resilience to the impacts of climate change, particularly flooding and extreme heat. The program was opened by Broward County Commissioner Furr and Rogers and the discussion featured renowned eco-artist Xavier Cortada with Adam Roberti, and the amazing Dr. Jurado, Chief Resilience Officer, Deputy Department Director at Broward County Government. Also in attendance were newly elected Broward County Commissioner Shuham and Hollywood Commissioner Idelma Quintana.

“This conversation gives me hope!”—Xavier Cortada

We are grateful for a strong night for pro-equality candidates across South Florida. SAVE-endorsed candidates won or advanced in 22 of 29 contested races in the August Primary.

That includes 17 outright wins across federal, state, county, judicial, school board, and municipal races across Broward and Miami Dade Counties.

These victories reflect more than endorsements. They reflect a community-led process, strong candidates, and an organizing operation that put real work behind our decisions.

Congratulations to every SAVE-endorsed candidate who won last night. The work continues.
