John Wayne (aka “the Duke”) had a tradition of giving personalized gifts to his cast and crew.
.
Here’s a mug he gave to Peter Ortiz commemorating their work together on The Searchers, the 1956 Western directed by Ortiz’s friend John Ford, head of the OSS Photographic Branch.

Proud to march with Scouting at the LA Korean Festival! 🇰🇷⚜️

This past weekend, Troop 43 Hollywood and Pack 43 joined other local packs and troops from the Metro District to staff the Scouting booth and march in the parade at the 53rd LA Korean Festival.

The festival started in 1974, when leaders of the early Korean American community set out to preserve their roots after immigrating to the United States. Today it brings together people from all over Los Angeles to share Korean culture, traditions, food, and performances. It’s a celebration of heritage, and a reminder that a city is stronger when its neighbors take the time to learn from each other.

That fits Scouting well. Our Scouts spent the weekend serving their community, representing their units with pride, and meeting families from all walks of life. Marching down the parade route in uniform, they showed what Scouting is about: showing up, helping out, and respecting every culture around us.

Thank you to the Scouts, parents, and leaders who gave their time, to our fellow Metro District units, and to the LA Korean Festival Foundation for welcoming us.

Want to see what Scouting is about? 🏕️

Troop 43 (ages 11 to 17) meets Tuesdays at 7:00 PM at Hollywood American Legion Post 43.

Pack 43 (Cub Scouts) meets the first and third Tuesdays, 6:30 to 7:30 PM, at the same location.

BUILDING SOMETHING

The wheels weren’t straight.

One side was longer than the other.

There was glue where there probably shouldn’t have been glue.

Four Wolf Scouts crowded around the table anyway, convinced they were building the fastest car anyone had ever seen.

One held the wood.

One worked the wheel.

One offered advice nobody asked for.

And one kept saying, “Try it again.”

So they did.

THE SCOUT’S VIEW

Sometimes the thing you build doesn’t look anything like the picture.

That doesn’t mean you failed.

You move the wheel.

Sand the edge.

Ask somebody to hold it.

Then try again.

And sometimes the best part isn’t what you made.

It’s who helped you make it.

FOR THE PARENTS

Adults often see the crooked wheel.

Scouts see the project.

What looks like a simple craft table is quietly teaching cooperation, patience, problem-solving, and how to recover when something doesn’t work the first time.

The finished car matters.

But not nearly as much as what happened while they were building it.
