Easy autumn garden upgrade 🍁🍂🍁.

Our garden is looking a bit sad now the flowers have died off, so I planted up a couple of Heritage Garden Pottery ceramic planters in sage green with Calluna heather lilac from my local @hilliergardencentres and they’ve bought a smile to my face.

The results are simple but striking and the purple heather is a welcome flash of autumn colour.

It’s back! Garden Diaries — Part 6 🌿

New build walls don’t come with character, you have to grow it. Literally 😅

Here’s what we’ve planted and where, in case you want to do the same:

West facing wall:
Rosa ‘Illusion’ Illusion Climbing Rose
Trachelospermum jasminoides Star Jasmine
Jasminum officinale Garden Jasmine

East facing wall:
Wisteria sinensis Chinese Wisteria
Rosa ‘Boscobel’ Bosco Bell Climbing Rose

All fixed with a wire system, once they grow you won’t see any of the hardware. Just the plants 🌿

ad One of my favourite things to do with my little girl is jobs in the garden. She absolutely loves looking for insects and bugs and we’ve been saving sunflower heads which are great for feeding the birds. We were kindly gifted the cosy range from @elho.world - have you ever seen more stylish insect and bird houses! It blends beautifully in our garden. I’ve tucker them away in a nice quiet corner of the garden so now we are on watch to see what birds come for a feast🪴

Did you visit @rutlandflowershow this year? 🌿🌸

I got tickets for my birthday and we had such a lovely day out. It felt a little less crowded than Chelsea, and I actually loved seeing so many plants and gardens looking like they were properly in their growing season

The show gardens were a real highlight for us. I was quietly taking notes and admiring all the details… being much closer to home than the big RHS shows definitely helps!

The One Minute Gardener had one important mission: find more succulents. I also wanted another look at the planters from @pebble.homegarden and we had a lovely chat with the team behind @wildmore.compost which seemed to be making an appearance in so many of the gardens

And then there was @thedippingtankcompany … I’m thinking one would look rather good outside @thedalythread sewing studio 👀 (she’s starting to teach sewing lessons of any of you are interested)

But the real highlight was bumping into @adamfrostdesign 🌱 He couldn’t have been nicer and stopped to chat to the One Minute Gardener. The young man went very shy and quiet, but he was absolutely thrilled afterwards 💚

A brilliant day out, lots of inspiration… now we’ll wait to see what next year brings 🌱

Hard to beat a crumble made almost entirely from the garden 🍐🌿

These pears and rhubarb were both homegrown, then while I was at work my wife @thedalythread and our little chef took over and turned them into this ridiculously good crumble

The cheeky hack? Adding some homemade granola straight into the topping for a little extra crunch. Remember, the best family recipes are about making something delicious, not overcomplicating things 😋

Then came the big question… which side are you on? 👇

This is Clematis ‘Diamantina’ available from @hilliergardencentres

This incredibly unusual and distinctive Clematis reaches around 1.8 to 2 m in height and produces two very distinctive flushes of flowers one in June and July before taking a short break in August and flowering again in September and October

Preferring a location in the garden in full sun but with its roots in the shade it’s incredibly easy to look after only needing light pruning to remove dead, damaged or unwanted growth in late January or early February

Mulch the Plant well and offer it plenty of water and protect its roots from direct sunlight to prevent wilt

Flowers are produced in large quantities with each flower measuring around 5 inches in diameter the most distinctive characteristic of this plant is that it holds its colour for between 21 and 28 days taking nearly 2 weeks to open fully each individual flower

The blooms are a Rich deep violet powder blue with a lovely lime green grey streak up the back of each pedal

Fully hardy to -15 it’s easy to grow problem free and can be grown in a pot or directly in the ground

Perfect for planting alongside climbing rose ‘Clarence House or maybe the incredibly opulent heavy cream ivory white ‘ crème de la crème both available from @peterbealesroses

💚 new plant alert💚

This is Pittosporum ‘Green Mound’ shortlisted for the very highly prised and contested Plants of the year from the RHS 2026 and available from @hilliergardencentres

An exceedingly drought tolerance and low maintenance evergreen shrub creating a dome shaped dense plant around 1.5 m tall and around 1.5 m wide

Producing highly fragrant White flowers which are adored by pollinators in late spring and early summer which overtime fade to a lovely creamy yellow colour

The shrub requires a very little maintenance however should you wish to control it size clip it lightly with a pair of shears after its flowered to control it size or use it as a possible substitute for box and regularly clip it into the evergreen shape of your choosing

Preferring and thriving in a location in the garden in full sun or in light but dappled shade it’s hardy to between -10 and -12 it’s dark shiny green leaves offering interest all year round
