No partner? No excuse.

Some of the most important work in sumo happens when nobody else is on the dohyo.

Shiko. Suriashi. Teppo. Matawari. Tachiai footwork. Visualization and repetition.

But here’s the question: if you could only pick ONE solo drill, which one gives you the most value?

And which drill do you think sumotori DON’T practice enough?

Drop yours below. I want to hear what everyone is working on.

Honu Lightweights on the World Stage. 🐢🇺🇸

Melody and Leah both two-time National Champions. Both Team USA athletes. Both Honu.

Different generations, same shell, same work ethic.

I’m incredibly proud of the work you both put in to get here. Stepping onto the World Championship dohyo is something special, and you represented Honu and Team USA with heart.

From our little corner of San Diego to competing against the world this is what we’ve been building.

Proud coach. Proud Honu. Maximum Effort.

From Honu Sumo to the World Championship podium. 🐢🇺🇸

Kellyann Ball just set a new career high TWO World Championship silver medals.

🥈 Heavyweight
🥈 Women’s Team

We’ve watched Kellyann put in the work, travel the world, keep learning, keep competing, and keep representing Honu everywhere she goes.

This one hits different. One of our own stood on the world stage and showed exactly what Maximum Effort looks like.

The shell travels well.

Honu Sumo. SoCal to the world.

Here’s a question for EVERYONE who loves sumo:

How do we get more kids into the dohyo?

I’m asking club leaders, coaches, parents, fans, pro sumo watchers anyone who is sumotori at heart.

Getting kids to try sumo is one challenge.

The BIGGER challenge: how do we keep them in sumo?

How do we take a kid who tries sumo today and build a lifelong love for the sport that carries into adulthood?

More youth tournaments? Better coaching? School programs? More fun? Stronger competition? Heroes they can look up to?

I want to hear from you.

How do we build the NEXT generation of sumo and keep them here?

What’s the point of sumo?

Winning? Medals? Throwing somebody into the third row?

Maybe.

But what happens after you lose?

What makes you step back onto the dohyo after getting thrown, pushed out, embarrassed, or simply realizing you weren’t good enough that day?

Maybe sumo is self-development. Maybe it changes how you handle failure. Maybe it changes how you see yourself and the world around you.

Or maybe I’m overthinking it and pushing people around in a circle is just really fun.

Either way, the pursuit stays the same: Maximum Effort.

What keeps YOU stepping back onto the dohyo?

What sport has the BEST carryover to sumo?

Judo — throws, balance & grips
Wrestling — pressure, shots & scrambling
BJJ — body control & leverage
Bökh — balance, trips & throws
Shuai Jiao — explosive throws & footwork
Or… SUMO. Just train sumo to get good at sumo.

Everybody brings something different to the dohyo.

What background do YOU think creates the most dangerous sumo wrestler? What did you start with?

What’s your favorite way to THROW in sumo?

Overhook — uwate?
Underhook — shitate?

Do you fight for that outside grip and launch, or sneak underneath and work from the inside?

Every rikishi has a preference. What’s yours?

UWATE or SHITATE? Drop it in the comments.

Sumo is about what you give to it.

Every push has your spirit behind it. Every step, every clash, every fight for position you put yourself into the dohyo.

So what’s YOUR style?

Hands to the throat? On the belt? Driving through the chest? Push, pull, throw?

Let me know where you like to fight from.

Santa Cruz brought the ENERGY!

Huge shoutout to Kellyann Ball for making history and showing exactly what happens when you put in the work.

Thank you to World Elite Sumo for running wild and continuing to push sumo forward. The energy and love for sumo in Santa Cruz is REAL.

We’ll definitely be back. The dohyo is just getting started.

Why do we keep pushing sumo?

Because every push grows the sport. Every new person who steps on the dohyo keeps sumo moving forward.

Push the sport. Grow the community. #TrySumo
