_________

What if one moment – one split second – changed everything?

When a firearms officer shoots a suspect dead and wounds another, who later dies in hospital, the official line is that the sun was in her eyes. Her body cam failed. Known only as Officer X, her anonymity is meant to protect her – until a judge releases her name and a media storm erupts.

Detective Superintendent Jack Dylan and DI Charley Mann are called in to determine whether it was a justifiable use of force – or something darker. And when it’s revealed that Officer X knew the victim, and her brother died of a drug overdose linked to the same woman, the case becomes charged with personal and political tension.

As pressure mounts, a vulnerable witness dies and a lost phone surfaces with a photograph and a message that could unravel everything – and reveal the truth about what happened that day.

Split Second brings Dylan and Mann together for the first time, in an investigation that will test their instincts, their loyalties and the limits of justice itself, as both detectives must decide how far they’ll go – and what they’re willing to sacrifice – to uncover the truth.

An easy five stars for the latest Trevor Wood DCI Jack Parker installment, The Angel of Death. This is the third in the series and each book gets better and better, building on the stories and narrative from the previous books to create an even more engrossing story.

For anyone who is new to the series- they are expertly plotted police procedurals, set in Newcastle, The USP with the series is that DCI Parker has early onset dementia. He hasn’t told many people about it and he’s still working in the police force. Jack is managing to keep the symptoms under control for the most part but if he forgets something or gets temporarily disorientated he can’t help but question whether there’s been a significant decline and what that might mean for him and his family.

In ‘The Angel of Death’ there appears to be a ‘mercy killer’ operating in the North of England. Terminally ill patients have been found dead before they were expected to die, and it seems that someone is helping them onto their final journey. Jack and his team are tasked with investigating whether there have been any crimes committed- in several of the cases, the bodies no longer exist, making it impossible to search for evidence.

Its set against a background of the current assisted dying debate; the killer, quickly dubbed ‘the Angel of Death’ by the local media, is quick to point out that assisted dying is legal in many parts of the world and that the UK is an anachronism in its attitude. And of course, Jack can’t say that the thought of ending it all in a legalised manner hasn’t crossed his mind. How can he investigate a crime that he is doesn’t believe is morally a crime at all?

I really enjoy how Trevor Wood writes- he blends the pace needed in a police procedural with the compassion and care that Jack deserves for his own medical diagnosis. And its witty and sharp too. I will read anything that Trevor writes, guaranteed.

Thanks to @orendabooks @randomthingstours and of course @trevorwood5822 for letting me join the blog tour! And happy publication day!

Synopsis

When a self-styled Angel of Death begins granting the dying a final act of mercy on the streets of Newcastle, DCI Jack Parker is forced to confront both a ruthless killer and his own advancing dementia. The gripping third instalment in Trevor Wood’s addictive, gritty DCI Jack Parker series.

‘Deeply unsettling and impossible to put down’ Sean Watkin

‘Gritty, timely, and relentlessly paced … with a cliffhanger ending that leaves you wanting so much more’ Nadine Matheson

‘Fast pace, relatable characters and [a] twisty crime story … A great addition to the series’ Patricia Gibney

‘This book has everything I want in a novel - moral ambiguity, sharp dialogue, authentic voices, and a whole lot of heart’ Emma Christie

__________

DCI Jack Parker is BACK…

Death is stalking the streets of Newcastle. An anonymous killer is offering the terminally ill a dignified escape. Mercy to some. Murder to others.

KILLER

DCI Jack Parker doesn’t want the case. He has a secret of his own – an early-onset dementia diagnosis he’s desperate to conceal. But the signs are becoming impossible to ignore. As his mind begins to betray him, the city faces its own moral reckoning.

OR

While politicians debate a contentious new law and the self-styled Angel of Death selects another victim, Jack’s world is shaken when the killings are traced to a carers’ support group – one his wife, Helen, has been attending in secret.

SAINT

Yet his deepest fear is also his darkest temptation. Because when his disease becomes unbearable, Jack can’t escape one haunting question:

Could the Angel of Death be the saviour he’s been waiting for?

What would you do if you needed to disappear from your own life?

I haven’t read Jo Spain for a while and its always such a treat when I do. Her stories are always so gripping and I think Never To Be Found might be a new favourite! It introduced me to a world that I knew nothing about, the world of ‘Johatsu’ or the disappeared, an actual phenomenon that can be found in Japan, with fixers who can assist people who want to completely disappear from their lives and start again.

Veronica has brought the service to the UK,
working hard to build a network of people who can help her, people who can provide fake IDs, others who can find new accommodation anywhere in the world, still others to help fake a CV that will convince employers that you are the real deal. None of them know each other and Veronica has been keeping it that way.
Its all going swimmingly until she is contacted by Seb, a handsome police officer, who tells her that one of her ex clients is wanted for a brutal double murder- and she was the last known person to see him, and may be the only person who might know where to find him.

At first Veronica is adamant that she doesn’t know anything about where he’s gone or even what he’s called but when she finds out more about his terrible crime, she relents and offers to contact her fake ID person, all the way knowing the damage that the interference might do to her reputation. They find out that the man has made his way to York and follow the trail there, Seb using his police contacts to access CCTV and official records. There’s strong chemistry between Veronica and Seb; he’s troubled and she’s hiding a deep family secret that she doesn’t share with anybody. The intensity of their investigations heightens the attraction between them, could there be a future?
There are so many about-turns and revelations, expertly dotted through the story, which keeps up its pace and then ramps it up in the final section. There are real heart-in=your-mouth moments when there is seemingly no escape for Veronica and Seb. As for the ending- I didn’t see it coming at all.

Highly recommended for something a bit different in the crime fiction world

When Anne Cater tells you that this is one of her favourite detective series, you know that it’s going to be good! And boy was she right - I practically inhaled ‘From The Shadows’.

It is a brilliantly plotted and expertly paced Scottish crime thriller that completely gripped me and changed my romantic view of the Highlands!

Detective Inspector Monica Kennedy is leading a police team investigating the suspicious discovery of a teenage boy’s body. Robert has been found dead in a remote Highlands location, his body laid out in a particular manner, and gruesomely found with a black stone lodged in his throat.

Social worker Michael Bach is looking for a missing teenage boy and approaches Monica with his suspicions. They soon realise that there is so much more going on than they first imagined, and none of it is good.

And all the time, they are being watched by a mysterious figure in the shadows, a figure who knows how to keep one step ahead of the others and who has a very clear view of where this is heading.

What a treat is to find an author that you know will be joining the auto-buy club! And even more of a treat to know that there are already more DI Kennedy books out there!

Have you ever been to Scotland?

thanks so much to @randomthingstours @gr_halliday_author for letting him me join the blog tour
