THE HOPS MUST BE CRAZY | HAZY IPA | 6.5% ABV

The Hops Must Be Crazy is a limited-edition Hazy IPA brewed in collaboration with Yakima Chief Hops, OC Brewery, Chopper One Brewing and Capital Craft Beer Academy.

The star of the show? HBC 1183, an experimental hop that has never been used outside the USA, alongside Nectaron HyperBoost, which has never before been used in South Africa. Both were made possible by Yakima Chief Hops.

Pilsner Malt | Chit | Spelt | Oats
HBC 1183 | Nectaron HyperBoost | CryoPop
WHC Thiol Unleashed | 6.5% ABV

Tasting Notes:
An immediate burst of vivid, juicy tropical fruit, with guava, passion fruit pulp, sweet pineapple and pink grapefruit zest taking centre stage. Waves of fleshy stone fruit, including peach and apricot, blend with a subtle herbal and berry complexity from HBC 1183, balancing the intense tropical punch of Nectaron HyperBoost.

Medium-low bitterness with a smooth, resinous oiliness that lingers on the tongue. A clean, drying finish without any astringent green hop bite. The smooth mouthfeel is complemented by a subtle nuttiness from the chit and spelt malts.

This is a very limited and very special beer.

The Hops Must Be Crazy will be available exclusively on tap at Capital Craft Beer Academy, with a limited number of 440ml cans available directly from OC Brewery.

🍻 Launch: Saturday, 10 October at 13:00
📍 Capital Craft Beer Academy, Menlo Park

This week I collaborated with Luke @hopcreeper from @YakimaChief to create a new Hazy IPA with experimental hop pellets that have never been used in San Diego before. This beer, which will be named “Experiment 1183,” showcases the HBC 1183 variety that contains off the charts levels of citrus and tropical flavors as well as undertones of berry.

Draft and cans will be available in a few weeks so that you can try the newest hop variety hitting the market only from Chula Vista Brewery.

#Beertime Podcast Ep 122: Luke Edward – How To Break A Leg And Land Your Dream Job

Luke Edward is a former Cape Town creative, who somehow ended up as Regional Sales Manager for Yakima Chief Hops in the USA. The road there involved advertising, app development, a knee destroyed on a mountain in Oregon, an online fermentation science degree he never finished, and a PowerPoint presentation built in a Frankfurt airport layover. In this episode we talk hops, harvest selection, the magic of agricultural ingredients, and what it actually takes to connect the world’s best brewers to the world’s best hop farms.

One of the best origin stories we’ve had on the show — and that’s saying something.

For the past few years one of the most exciting places in beer has been Orange County. Tons of creativity and innovation coming out of a small area. One of the breweries on the for front of that is Everywhere Beer. We’re so excited to make this beer with these guys.
The nomenclature on these hoppy lagers is ever evolving. Changing and making tweaks in the actual process itself have made vaste differences between an India pale lager, cold IPA, Italian pils, or even west coast pils.
This Modern pils is something even newer for us. All Pilsner malt and 34/70 lager yeast fermented mid warm in the high 50s. Then late additions of anchovy and chinook hops. Dry hopped at 3 lbs per barrel, giving it this really intense aroma. Big citrus pop on flavor out the gate with loads of grapefruit and raspberry. It doesn’t stop there, then it has a finish of pine and grapefruit. Very clean and crisp while not shying away from flavor. We have done similar styles but nothing quite like this. We truly made this recipe together with technique and ingredients. Cheers y’all. I hope you enjoy it while it last.
