City of Dance — Koyaanisqatsi June 17, 2026 Hollywood Forever, Los Angeles This past June, L.A. Dance Project performed City of Dance — Koyaanisqatsi at Hollywood Forever, where dance joined the films, concerts, and gatherings that bring the city together among the resting places of Hollywood's founders and stars. City of Dance moved through Southern California's landmarks, bringing free performance to museums, gardens, parks, and the edge of the sea. Set to Philip Glass's Koyaanisqatsi, it invited the city, and whoever happened to be passing through, to stop and watch. I have been on the edge of my seat for months, waiting for this project to come out. Today is the day you’ll see this insane body of work, that I had the honor and privilege of working on @deafheavenband @janusz_kaminski @degenerate_dad It was a very unique challenge getting these masks over the dancers faces, cutting holes for them to see and breathe through, putting the makeup on the outside of the fabric, and then touching up repeatedly over the span of a 15 hour shoot day. Every time the dancers needed a break to breathe and let their skin get air, we had to try to keep the fragile fabric in tact and reapply because the sweat and heat were melting the makeup off 🥲 can now add that to my repertoire, haha I can’t wait for everyone to behold this piece. It was absolutely breathtaking watching this come to be. This piece was moving. It was awe inspiring. It gave me chills all over, gave me a rush like I was coming up on psychedelics. At Work in the Fields of the Bomb takes its title from the book by Robert Del Tredici who photographs sites in the US where atomic weapons are built, examining the gulf between the public’s view of the Bomb’s existential enormity and the nonchalance of those who produce them. It’s a strange idea that cataclysms are built from so many mundane actions. Even with the consequences known, we play with extermination wittingly. AWITFOTB is about what leads us to moments we can’t return from. Of Tredici’s work, Jonathan Schell wrote “This may offer a more authentic clue to the nature of peril, whose direct consequence, after all, is eternal nothingness. We cannot be witnesses to our extinction…we look at what we can see. A peek inside Duet with Film 🎥💃 Dance Camera West is thrilled to be working with Colburn on its first craft course, Duet with Film: A Dance Film Creation Course, led by DCW co-founder Kelly Hargraves with visiting artist Jessie Lee Thorne. Over six weeks, participants are exploring how movement and filmmaking come together, from concept and choreography through shooting and editing. And the dance-on-film momentum continues. This January, Dance Camera West returns for its 2027 Festival at venues across Los Angeles, including our LA POPS UP program at Colburn’s Zipper Hall. Looking further ahead, Colburn has just announced the September 2027 opening celebrations for its Frank Gehry-designed campus expansion, including a new Dance Center that will become the home of the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute.
