@duppyprojects is a newspaper in negative: pages saturated in black ink, with text printed in white.

This limited-edition publication from @josephdouglaselmhirst takes its title from the Jamaican Patois term for a ghost and explores – through photography and conversations with @alvarobarrington, @eastwindscove.jamaica, @devonncharlesfrancis and others – how Jamaica’s past has shaped artistic practices across the Black diaspora.

“In a country that has such a complex history as Jamaica, but so little of it recorded, it feels really important to create something tangible,” says Joseph, who was inspired by the archives of newspapers and journals such as Savacou, Hot Spice and the West Indian Gazette. “I wanted the fragility of the newsprint to reflect the fragility of preservation in that region.”

He worked with graphic designer @bryce.carrington to bring a “gothic sensibility” to the newspaper and wax-pencil illustrations by Violet Hoppe (@hoppppppeeeee) materialise like apparitions across the pages.

📰 Printed on our midi newspapers on 55gsm improved newsprint. Duppy is available now at duppyprojects.com and at the following stockists:

Jamaica: @nationalgalleryofjamaica
London: @bcaheritage
Lagos: @alaralagos
Paris: @1909.bookstore
Melbourne: @fiendbookshop

This past weekend I attended the @dominiquealysestudios debut show (which was incredible!). The two weeks leading up to the event, I spent making a dress for myself out of a curtain I found at the thrift store.

To everyone who helped along the way, I love you.🤍

To anyone interested in the ‘how’, I have highlighted key points of my design process below.

My goal was to make a well fitting, classic dress that I can reuse for many events over my lifetime. This is the first time I have made pattern blocks/slopers (pic 5) for my own body which was both the most time consuming and rewarding part of this process.

For the sketches, I drew the croquis (pic 4) by tracing a picture of myself to ensure I was designing for my own body. I haven’t done this before and found it immensely helpful.

Once the pattern blocks were finished, I used them to create the final patterns (pic 7). Even when I’m not using a zero waste technique, I try to organize the patterns to reduce cut off waste as much as possible without compromising proper grainlines.

I made a muslin/toile (pic 8) to test the fit of my patterns, made a couple alterations, and moved into final fabric.

Lastly, I wanted to share some questions I debated concerning the environmental impact of creating this dress.

1. Did turning the curtain into a dress actually extend the lifetime of the materials/save material from the landfill. Would someone have used it better/longer as a curtain?

2. Is using second hand polyester/poly blend better than using new fabrics of natural fibers? Could I realistically aim to use only second hand natural fibers?

3. Is me pursuing my passion worth creating waste, even small amounts (pattern paper cutoffs, serger trimmings, thread tails). Would it have been better to thrift an already made dress?

4. Finding materials at the thrift store means driving around to different places more than I would just going to the fabric store for everything I need. How much do those emissions negate using second hand materials?

I do my best.

I like to rise when the sun she rises early in the morning!
And I like to hear them small birds singing merrily upon their laylums
And hurrah for the life of a country boy and to ramble in the new mown hay! 🌞
