Help me pick the best and worst horses in art! March 21 at the National Gallery of Art, 10AM, or online anytime at bit.ly/rate-horses

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Standing in front of Augustus Saint-Gaudens' crazy over-the-top dramatic #RobertGouldShaw / #54thMassachusetts monument in Gallery 66 of the National Gallery of Art is like being in a movie theater watching "Glory," the 1989 Matthew Broderick-Morgan Freeman-Denzel Washington movie. And indeed, this is the regiment depicted in that movie. Now the "finished" bronze stands on #BostonCommon, freshly restored and looking great. But I've always thought it odd and wonderful that this plaster "rough" here in D.C. is the version #AugustusSaintGaudens actually considered the finished piece. I mean, to the extent that the famously fussy Saint-Gaudens ever considered any of his pieces really "finished."
This sculpture got some love in @AlyssaFowers' recent, hilarious "Horsequest" adventure, an attempt to rate each of the horses depicted in the sprawling @nationalgallery via crowdsourcing. The results – which will crack you up as well as show you a side of the National Gallery you may not have considered – are all on the @horsequest_dc Instagram. That's right: this whole @oneminute.atatime reel is therefore a HORSEQUEST SPINOFF.

My signature contribution to @horsequest_dc 2026 was this genuinely horrifying — but invigoratingly colorful — welcome sign. Just doin my part to get the horse under control I guess
