A couple of years ago, while visiting Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica, Kim and I had dinner at a beautiful resort called Makanda by the Sea. We only got to see a small part of the property that evening, but what we saw was enough to make us want to come back someday and stay for a while.

This time, that was the entire reason for our trip.

Perched among the cliffs and lush tropical hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Makanda is an absolutely stunning place. The architecture, the beautiful accommodations, the incredible views, and the way the entire resort seems to blend into the surrounding rainforest make it a pretty remarkable destination.

But as beautiful as the resort itself is, the wildlife might have been our favorite part.

We spent the better part of our stay doing very little other than wandering between the different areas of the property, enjoying the scenery, and watching the jungle come alive around us. White-faced capuchins, squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, sloths, tropical birds, iguanas, and some surprisingly large rodents all made appearances. We even went looking for a giant anaconda that was reportedly hanging around nearby, but unfortunately, we never crossed paths. Probably just as well.

It was one of those rare trips where we had absolutely no desire to leave the resort. There was always something interesting to see, somewhere beautiful to sit, or another unexpected visitor wandering through the trees.

We’d been looking forward to staying at Makanda ever since that first dinner a couple of years ago, and it turned out to be everything we’d hoped for.

A fantastic few days in one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever stayed, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Costa Rican rainforest. I’m awfully glad we made the trip. Thanks @hotelmakanda for such an amazing time.

I have some incredible partners waiting for you to join them for Pura vida in Costa Rica (with or without kiddos!)
Special shout out to Manuel Antonio’s Makanda by the Sea — a rainforest-bluff hotel redone with Balinese lines and mid-century glam, no kids in sight, a hundred meters above the Pacific. It’s the kind of place I keep in my back pocket for clients who want the beach and the quiet at the same time. Planning something like this for next year? Share this with the friend who always ends up running point on the group trip :)

There is something tender about reaching a birthday that makes you stop and really look at your life.

I’ve been thinking about all the versions of me who brought me here. The ones who dreamed, the ones who doubted, the ones who began again without knowing what would come next. At 35, I feel a little more tenderness for all of them.

Some of what I’m celebrating lives quietly within me. The ways I’ve grown. The moments I’ve learned to listen to myself. The space I’m making for a life that feels like my own.

And I’m celebrating the joy, too. Being loved. Laughing. Allowing myself to slow down and enjoy a beautiful moment without rushing toward the next one.

My hope for this year is to recognize the good while I’m living it. To be present with the people I love. To keep discovering who I am, and to appreciate the woman standing here today.

Thank you @hotelmakanda for giving this birthday such a beautiful place to unfold. I’m grateful for the space to pause, celebrate, and carry these memories into a new year of life. 🌿

And if you’re meeting a new chapter of your own, I hope you give yourself a little tenderness. There is room to be proud of how far you’ve come and still be curious about who you’re becoming.

Here’s to 35. To the life I’ve lived, the love I get to feel, and everything I have yet to discover.

A little more at home in myself. 🤍

We are so happy to share that Makanda by the Sea is selected in the MICHELIN Guide 2026.

Makanda has always been a place with a feeling all its own: the jungle, the ocean, the quiet, the people. Seeing it selected feels truly deserved.

Thank you to every guest who has stayed with us, come back and brought friends. And thank you to our team, who make Makanda what it is every single day.

Sometimes the view becomes part of the stay itself.

Three places where the line between the hotel and its surroundings almost disappears:

Makanda by the Sea — Costa Rica
Marina Bay Sands — Singapore
Hôtel Créolia — Réunion Island

Which view would you wake up to?
