Since December 2024, it has produced 50 eruptive episodes. 🤯 Some last for hours. Others continue for days. Some create massive lava fountains… Others are much smaller. But here’s what most people don’t know… 👇 As an eruption changes, volcanic hazards like tephra (hot volcanic rock and ash) can become a safety concern. 🌋 When that happens, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park temporarily closes, and visitors are asked to leave. That’s why, if you’re hoping to catch an active eruption, your best chance is to go as soon as it starts✨ And if you’ve been to the Big Island before, you already know… It’s BIG🚗🌋 A drive that looks short on the map can easily take hours, and when Kilauea starts erupting, traffic heading toward the park builds quickly. Road access may also be affected.
