🗽 In the early 2000s we branded Williamsburg | Brooklyn through 11211 Magazine. Not an ad campaign for a 3000+ businesses in a neighborhood but, identity of the neighborhood itself. The standard read is that people moved there for cheap rent, restaurants and room to create. That was their alibi, not the actual reason. What actually moved them was a drive much older than economics: the pull to belong to a cultural tribe on its way up, and to join fellow achievers and early-adopters to be something new. We built for that drive on intentionally. The rent and restaurants were the reasons their minds gave themselves afterwards. Then the market did what markets do once perception shifts. They came. They visited. They saw. Then they moved in. Uccelli’s, a restaurant on the corner of North 6th and Berry, is where 11211 was conceived in 2000. Today that same store is a Warby Parker. Now there’s a Rolex, Chanel, Breitling, Salomon, Patagonia, Le Labo Fragrances and a Google store all on the same block. Across the street, a Hermès is planning to open in 2026. That is our whole thesis on two blocks. Change how a place is perceived, and the value follows the perception. We did not renovate a single building. We changed what the addresses meant, and the market repriced everything into it. A firm is no different. You are an address in your market’s mind. 🍇 People don’t completely trust today’s brands. 🗽 A brand is often seen as an intrusion in our lives. When a brand isn’t done properly, it is unremarkable and nearly invisible. It disappears into the background. The further away it is (time and distance), the harder it is to see. Most semi-pros attempt to help build a brand in the brain. The problem is that what they wind up with is generally Unremarkable. People do trust other people. Branding to the brain requires some storytelling, maybe a song, special handshake and a system of values we can align or NO ALIGN with. There are many more cultural components to consider (the market, purpose, beliefs, personal, emotions) to create a deeply connective culture.
