“Groomed to the hilt and impeccably dressed, Filipinos flocked to LA.” Before there was Historic Filipinotown, our manongs built a bustling hub in DTLA’s Little Manila. During the 1920s-1940s, those who didn’t tend the local farms and fields or in service to the White community at nearby hotels, would open barbershops, restaurants, haberdasheries, and pool halls to cater to their growing community. They dressed up to assimilate, but also to assert their agency. They were beasts of burden in the fields they worked, but when they stepped out they broke necks.

100 years later, LA is home to the largest Filipino population outside of the Philippines. With our eyes locked on the future, we returned to the streets where they would stunt - to pay homage and continue their legacy of style.

“The Filipino is a natty fellow, almost always immaculately groomed.”

“The streets became the stage where
performances of spectacle... played out in the ethnic community.”

“a snazzy ensemble transformed brown bodies from overworked, exploited laborers to symbols of sensuality”

“We wore the best clothes in the market and entertain...”
