~The Introduction~

3 days, 4 events, 7 outfit changes, 11 performances, and an infinite amount of LOVE. I am still processing how blessed I am to have had the wedding that #CHESS2022 was ❤️.

Here is a short highlight clip by @kolefilms of The Introduction — the first official wedding event. The cultural significance of this event cannot really be summarized in an IG post, but I’ll try, lol.

For an engagement to be considered official in the Esan (my tribe in Nigeria) tradition, the family of the groom-to-be must “knock on the door” of the bride-to-be’s family home, bringing gifts from their homeland (Chris’ family brought Tito’s from Texas, amongst other things), to state their son’s intentions for a daughter of the home.

Once the intentions have been stated, the groom-to-be is called in to describe the “flower” he wishes to pick from their “garden”. He must describe her accurately and say her full name (the first to say it during the event) before she is called down.

The bride-to-be is then asked if “she knows this man and if the family should accept their drinks/food?” If she says “no”, everyone leaves 😂. If she says “yes,” the engagement is on and everyone can party!

For me personally, it was an emotional, beautiful experience that I do not have the words to describe. I just know how I felt. And I could feel my parents (especially my dad @iqbreeder ) going through something very sacred, as well.
