What happens when empty space becomes the structural centre of a vessel?

At Ceramic Art Fair + Glass in Paris, House of Today presents Prima Materia, a new body of work by Lebanese designer-maker Sybil Layous, developing the ideas first explored in her Interstice series in 2024.

Layous begins with a deliberate separation: the vessel’s neck no longer meets its body. An interval remains between the two, held in tension by the handles that connect them.

Those handles carry much of the architecture. Some recall the sweeping curves of ancient amphorae; others branch into horns, spikes and serpentine extensions. The vessel remains recognisable, but its familiar anatomy is unsettled.

Her engagement with ancient ceremonial objects deepened after encountering an Achaemenid vessel handle depicting a winged ibex at the Louvre. Rather than reproducing archaeological forms, Layous draws on their ability to blur the boundary between function and symbolism.

The glazes complicate that reading further. Deep reds, pale greens, turquoise and metallic surfaces can appear oxidised like excavated bronze, reflective or almost mineral - moving the works between something apparently ancient and something unfamiliar.

Every piece is hand-built in Layous’s Paris studio through coiling and pinching, without a wheel. She shapes the body, neck and handles in front of a mirror to control proportion and balance - a meticulous process that allows rupture to appear unexpectedly stable.
In Prima Materia, absence is not simply what is missing from the vessel. It is what gives the vessel its structure.

Introducing REGALIA, a ceremonial bowl from my latest collection, Prima Materia, debuting with @houseoftoday at @ceramicartfair in Paris.

Prima Materia draws on the enduring mythology of ancient vessels, bringing together animal hybrids, serpentine contours, horn-like extensions, and tentacles. The forms evoke rituals about to unfold, translating their ceremonial weight into contemporary ceramic form.

For Lebanese architect and artist Shaha Raphael, every project is a creative journey, often leading somewhere entirely unexpected. Combining digital tools with the human touch, she explores new possibilities in artistic expression.
For Jimmy Choo’s 30th anniversary, ‘Pearls of Wisdom’ draws inspiration from the beauty of pearls and the sea, looking beyond their appearance to the time, patience and process behind their formation.
